The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 33 (Aug 2022 Wk 33) Spotify Playlist

SoulStrutter selections of the best releases this week
(Aug 2022 Wk 33)
In no particular order other than tempo.

A straight dozen this week as the summer slump in the number of great quality releases continues. I've selected what I think is the best track from a good five track EP "Brown Liquor Music" from Cameo Holliday which is well worth checking out if you appreciate 'authentic' timeless soul music. You could still be playing this in 20 plus years time which can't be said for a lot of the 'faddish' neo stuff being released!

The full album from Midnight.Blue, "Breathe" was released on Thursday. A good album from B.B. King's granddaughter Val B. King "So Many Ways" was released on Friday but only on Bandcamp so couldn't be included as with a few other bits n pieces on promo only.

There's been a bit of a buzz over "Kobe" by Kayra in the last couple of weeks on promo which got released on Friday on a full album "Karma" but there's nothing else as good on the album (except perhaps "Milton" IMO) including the remix which strips it back and, for me, strips the 'guts' out of it!

It boiled down to a choice between Kayra and Frank McComb for this week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week from the playlist but, as they are both already attracting plenty of attention and airplay, I'm going for the Val B. King album "So Many Ways" as I'm not sure that many know about it as yet.

The Neo Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 23 Aug 2022 Wk 33 Spotify Playlist

The SoulStrutter selection of the best Neo Soul releases
for: Aug 2022 Wk 33 in no particular order.

It was a bit of a push pulling together a dozen 'good un's' this week so a few liberties have been take i.e. Keyshanna K is technically a reissue as it was released as a single in 2019 and Little Dragon was released as a double single (10 Aug) but this track featured on their 2020 album "New Me, New Us" and  Sidibe is also a 'remix' (stripped back version).

The SS top 3 this week would be Nailah (which was going to be in main dozen but put here as it was short of tracks) Thuy and Swantjé.

Playlist:
Susan Carol' - Run Me My Money [25 Jul]
Thuy - playing tricks [16 Aug]
Keyshanna K - Little Ocean [2 Aug] (Reissue 5 Jun 2019)
Little Dragon - Where You Belong [10 Aug]
Tanya Nolan - The Best [9 Aug]
C. Cmphany - You Should Be With Me [16 Aug]
Swantjé - Lost Your Mind (Sweet Nothings EP) [20 Aug]
Sarah Steil - West Side [19 Aug]

Stephfon [2022] - Famous [Platinum Vybe Recordings]

One that slipped by on 5 Aug 2022 by Stephfon (Wade) with "Famous".  It is a new recording of a song he released on his 2016 debut album "Rhythm & Me" which featured a rap S-Dub.  I'll include both versions and you can decide, but I feel sure that the new version it is a better more soulful one.

VA [2022] - For Your Ears Only [Act Of Sedition #AoS 007] (Full EP)

A four track digital release from Act Of Sedition run by DJ/producer Andy Bull (aka Bully Boy) out of Six Fours Les Plages (near Toulon), France. It was previously released on 16 Jun 2021.

It includes The Born Messenger's Llorcavaller remix of Sonya Spence's 1981 rare groove tune "Let Love Flow",  Bruno Bellissimo with an instrumental version of Prince's "Cold Coffee & Cocaine", a version of Instant Funk's 1976 TSOP disco jam "It Ain't Reggae" by Lego Edit and "Dub Time Baby" by Bully Boy is 'what it says in the tin', an inst/dub version of Jackie Moore / O'Jays "This Time Baby".

I've included original versions below but Instant Funk isn't available on Spotify and unfortunately all YouTube videos for it have, for some reason, been blocked in UK.

The Jack Moves [2022] - Cruiserweight [Everloving, Inc.] (Full Album)

Following their last two highly regarded singles "Somebody's Watching You" (18 Mar 2022) and "Seabra" (29 Jul 2022), The Jack Moves announce the release of their third album "Cruiserweight" which is due for release on 14 Oct 2022.

The album, obviously, includes both of the latest singles which featured in "The Dirty Dozen" on week of their release with the latest single being chosen as SoulStrutter Selection of The Week and also entering the Global Soul Chart at #18 this week.

The Newark, NJ, duo Teddy Powell and Zee Desmondes debuted in 2002 with a vinyl only single "Kiss In The Dark" / "A Fool For You" (a cover of Chicago group The Ledgends which has featured on the blog in 2020).

Their acclaimed debut, self-titled, album arrived on Wax Poetics in 2015 followed by "Free Money" in 2018.

The new album will be available digitally, on CD and an vinyl. At present only sound for the two singles is available but no doubt another track may be pre-released before the album come out?

They write about "Lionel Richie" being "a hard soul banger, complete with throbbing bassline, menacing drums, luscious string and horn arrangements and cocky vocals. The song is reminiscent of The Ohio Players and Rick James funk, or INXS dance-rock if spun at one of David Mancuso's infamous ‘70s parties at The Loft. It's a distinctly east coast R&B sound, but able to sit comfortably alongside a contemporary outer-regional song like "Am I Wrong" by Anderson .Paak & the Free Nationals, or joints by artists like Bakar and Frank Ocean. Imagine a steaming subway commute through the bowels of the city, to emerge into the powder keg that is NYC… ‘Lionel Richie' is that energy. Perfect for modern and nostalgic soul, funk, boogie, rare groove, and disco playlists".

So, If I were a gambling man, I'd wager that "Lionel Richie" is released as the next single before the album release?

Val B. King [2022] - So Many Ways [Self Released] (Full Album)

Val B. King is from Cleveland, OH, and is the granddaughter of the legendary B. B. King, so it's hardly surprising that she has included one of his iconic songs "The Thrill Is Gone" on her sophomore album "So Many Ways" released on Friday (19 Aug 2022) on Bandcamp only.  It follows her 2016 debut "Life, Love, Music".

B.B. King didn't write the song, it was written by Rick Darnell and Roy Hawkins but is incorrectly credited to A (Art) Benson and D (Dale) Pettie on King's 1969 Bluesway release. On Val's new version, the album's producer, Frank McComb is also credited, presumably for the re-arrangement.

To date, Val B. King has released four singles since 2016 and the last three are all included on the album "So Many Ways, Than One" (Sep 2019 feat. Frank McComb), "Ooh You" (Aug 2020 featuring Najee on flute and Frank McComb on backing vocals) and "The Thrill Is Gone" (Jan 2022). Her first single, "The Legacy Goes On" (Feb 2016), featured on "Life, Love, Music".

Two, non-single, tracks stood out on first listen, "Hold Me" and the stepper "Gotta Find You".

Sarah Steil [2022] - West Side [SAS]

Chicago born, Nashville, TN, resident Sarah Steil started releasing music in 2018. Her new single "West Side" featuring the song's co-writer, Nashville producer Ryan Prewett, was released on Friday (19 Aug 2022). It's one of those wispy neo soul numbers.
