The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 30 (Jul 2022 Wk 30) Spotify Playlist

SoulStrutter selections of the best releases this week
(Jul 2022 Wk 30)
In no particular order other than tempo.

I'm sorry to say it's been another poor week for good quality new releases. So much so that I struggled got find twelve worthy enough to feature in this week's main dozen. I had hoped that one or two may have cropped up in today's releases but unfortunately not. Therefore, I've had to take a few liberties to make up a full dozen and have included four tracks that should really be in the covers/reissues dozen i.e. Angel Sessions is a reissue from 1999, Alanna Royale is a vinyl reissue from last year, Verne 'VA' Allison is a reworking of a song he wrote that was recorded by The Dells in 2000 and Miracle Thomas is a cover of Juicy's 1985 "Sugar Free".

So, ruling those four out, left only eight to choose from for this week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week and I've decided to go for The Jack Moves new single "Seabra".

To be perfectly honest it was either that or Beyonce's "Plastic Off The Sofa" but I'm sure selecting that, I would never have lived that down. I hope DJs get behind it though, as contrary to what I wrote about the new Chaka Khan single, although Beyonce is mainstream, this song is chosen on merit not because of who she is, but there will be those who will refuse to play it because of who she is which is not right either!

The new Avery*Sunshine album has a couple of good tracks (included below), but more than half the tracks are live which precluded it from selection. Alanna Royale is superb and has already been chosen as SSSotW when it was released last July.

Chaka Khan [2022] - Woman Like Me [The SoNo Recording Group]

When a legend such as Chaka Khan releases new music it cannot be ignored. However, I'm afraid to say that this new song "Woman Like Me" doesn't do anything for me (and I have also received opinions from some highly respected soul people to make sure I'm not out on a limb with my opinion) but I'll post it up anyway so you can make your own decision on it. I think it's trying to please everyone i.e. the pop market which may alienate soul music lovers as this to me is not remotely soulful!

You may disagree, that's your prerogative, but I'm also entitled my opinion and I'm not going to pretend to like a mediocre song just because it's sung by Chaka Khan. If it wasn't Chaka Khan singing it then it would more than likely be completely ignored!  She deserves a much better song than this. It is also derivative, I can't quite put my finger on it but think it may sound similar to an Alicia Keys song?

I don't usually write negative reviews but feel we need some balance as, I'm sorry to say that, this is everything that is wrong with the music business and society in general, celebrity wins over quality every time. Independent artists release far superior music and put their heart and soul and own money into it which, in the main, is ignored and 'mainstream' artists release mediocre music and the media is all over it and hence the 'blind' follow because of who it is and not on merit! Time for a reality check methinks!

SierraLashine [2022] - The Beginning [Self Released] (Full EP)

SierraLashine (Sierra Lashine Boone) is a new artist from Philadelphia who debuted with a single "My Fault" in April 2022 and followed it with "I Wanna" in May. Today she has released a five track EP "The Beginning" which includes her first, but not her second, single.

She is credited for writing all tracks, the first (and only non-explicit track) with Recklezz (Lawrence Porterfield Jr.) who also features on it which is also probably the choice cut.

Global Soul Chart 30th Jul 2022 (Week 30)

30th Jul 2022
The Global Soul chart broadcast on Sat 30th Jul as it is every Saturday between  5pm-7pm (GMT) on Global Soul Radio.

Each week around a dozen or more 'Breakers' are interspersed with chart entries. These will be posted separately. This week Russ Cole presented the chart and breakers.

An evenly balanced chart again this week with seven up (other brands are available!), six down, six new entries and one non-mover. Roger Williams [2022-07-30] - The Soulsorts Podcast [Podcast #15]

The 'Dodger' is back after a two week layoff with his latest The Soulsorts Record Room ’22 Summer C120 Sessions #7 with two hours of superb album tracks.

I've got it playing right now and what a pair of openers. I'd forgotten just how good Ruby Andrews "Cinderfella" was and as for Willie Hutch, who inspired  the blog name from his 1976 album only track "Soul Strut" no words are needed. Then we get an obscure track "So Long" from James Brown from his 1975 "Hot" album which only got released in Brazil as single/EP.

A quick scan through the playlist and they all look like they're from 70s/80s. So for any NOT watching the women's Euro Final later then you know what to do!

The podcast is available on Mixcloud and Podomatic where you can also download it to listen offline.

The Precisions [2022] - Treason [Stony Pointe Records]

A compilation of rare soul tracks recorded in Boston, MA, "The Skippy White Story: Boston Soul 1961-1967" is due for release on 28 Aug 2022.

One track, "Treason" by The Precisions, a Boston group not the more well known one from Detroit, has been pre-released last week.

Eli 'PaperBoy' Reed (aka Eli Husock from Boston) had an Ace Recording Studio (Boston) acetate of it, from which he pressed up 40 copies and sold them on Bandcamp in Jun 2020. They sold very quickly, within minutes of putting them up, at $35 each.

Skippy White is the alias for Fred LeBlanc who was originally a radio presenter on WILD am1090 in the 60s. He opened a record shop in Boston in 1961 and also set up a label named WILD on which The Precisions released "What Would You Do" / "The Love (I Found In You)" in 1966 (both sides included in YouTube clip below), so I would guess that this recording is from around that same time, although it sounds a bit earlier to my ears.

A few years ago I took a trip to Boston and Washington and used the opportunity to do a bit of crate digging and one the the haunts to visit just had to be the legendary Skippy Whites. It was a bit of a hike as I recall as it was out in the suburbs and nowhere near a train station. It's miles away from it's original location at 1820 Washington Street, then located at 1971 Columbus Ave. It is now completely closed as of 2020 after opening its doors in 1961. They commenced a closing down sale in Jan 2020 which was then interrupted by that Coronavirus thing! Skippy would be around 86 now as he was born in 1936.

It was rather ramshackle and there were loads of records stacked up out of their sleeves scratched to b*ggery and nothing was organised. It was literally trying to find a needle in a haystack and pot luck if you found anything interesting! Whilst I was there three guys who were obviously DJs, gospel ones I think, which is becoming big stateside possibly due to London expat Greg Belson and his Divine Chord Gospel Shows since 2011. I seem to recall they had come up from NY or New Jersey and were in a bit of a hurry as they had a gig that night and came in to see what they could grab.  I don't think I managed to pick up very much and nothing was priced so, thinking that they would be cheap as hardly any were in sleeves, I presented them to Skippy at the counter. He quoted what I thought were ridiculous prices for knackered records (between $20-$50 for many of them from recollection with nothing being particular sought after), so I dumped most of them and left with only a small handful. Nothing particularly rare or hard to find as I guess the store has been well and truly plundered of anything decent long ago, but we always live in hope!
