The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 10 (Mar 2022 Wk 10) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Mar 2022 Wk 10)
In no particular order other than tempo.

Yet another so-so sort of week for good quality new material with nothing really standing out from the pack. The EP from Aaliyah Zhané has a few good tracks on it, only the second release from LIDI. is nice and the new single from another newcomer Nalani Rothrock are all worthy of mention. Tonya Nicole's single, released on Friday, is a real grower but 'ruined' by an 'unnecessary' rap so the tape splicer will be taken to that. This week's choice is a five track EP from London-based, Dutch singer/songwriter Dafne Adriana for her debut EP "Don't Get Obsessed With A Stranger" which is therefore this week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week.

This week I've split the more neo soul style releases into a separate playlist "The Neo Dirty Dozen".

The Neo Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 10 (Mar 2022 Wk 10) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best Neo soul releases this week (Mar 2022 Wk 10)
In no particular order other than tempo.

A new feature as I've decided to separate out the more neo soul tunes from the main Dirty Dozen so that perhaps they both flow a bit better

James Foster [2022] - Distant Lover 2022 Mix [Self Released]

I can't find much information about James Foster, but he originally recorded a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Distant Lover" ("Let's Get It On" 1973) in 2017 and today (13 Mar 2022) has released a 2022 Mix. I've posted both versions as, to be honest, I can't really hear any significant difference.

I did find a video for it which premiered on YouTube on Christmas Eve 2021 where his name is given as James Nelson Foster. The same video has been posted on another channel on 11 Mar which gives a little more info stating that: James Foster has appeared as an opening act for legendary artists such as the Temptations, The Whispers and The Manhattans. He is currently singing around Baltimore while writing and recording his own original material.

He has an excellent voice and a similar timbre to the great Marvin Gaye who he has been compared to on numerous occasions.

SoulStrutter Top 30 - 13th Mar 2022 (Week 10)

The SoulStrutter Top 30 of the most viewed posts in the last 30 days (i.e. blog readers choices).

There are eight new entries, the highest being from Blue Lab Beats collaboration with DedachiKenta which seems to have come from nowhere. As anticipated Charlie Wilson leapfrogs Sound Of Superbad into the top spot with significantly more views in the last week in particular.

The surprising high new entry is Aaliyah Zhané with her EP "The Good & The Bad" which was only posted yesterday.

I don't think there will be a lot of movement next week looking at durations but we will definitely loose seven: Melba & Carmichael, Silk Sonic, Mary J. Blige, LaToya & Anthony Hamilton, Jennifer Holliday, Duceplay and Cocoa St. James.

Summary: 4 risers, 11 fallers, 7 non-movers, 8 new entries

Only new material appears in the Top 30, however, re-issued material does attract lots of views and the top 10 reissues are currently:

01 - Don-E - Future Bounce EP (previously released material)
02 - Thelma Houston - Nothing Left To Give (Expansion re-issue)
03 - VA - Soul Drops  (Miles Away compilation)
04 - Down To Earth - Still Ridin' High (vinyl issue)
05 - Manhattans - The Philadelpia Re-edit Sessions (remixes)
06 - Gil Scott-Heron - Ghetto Ghosts (Live 1977) (live recording)
07 - Raja-Nee - Come Get This Love (forthcoming LRK vinyl reissue)
08 - Marc Staggers - What The World Needs Now (reissue)
09 - UCFM - California Funk Machine Vol 1 (compilation of covers)
10 - Dayton - Sky's The Limit (Super Disco Edits prev. unreleased)

Richard Marks [2022] - Innocent Bystander / Ups And Downs + Living My Life (Day To Day) [Hit And Run #HR 1537]

Garry Cape at Hit And Run has selected Richard Marks' original 1976 version of "Innocent Bystander", a track well know in rare soul circles via Bill Wright's 1978 version on Midtown, as the A side of a pair of new Hit and Run 45 reissues. It was originally issued on Salsoul subsidiary Free Spirit with an instrumental flip side.

He has chosen, what he considers, perhaps the finest deep soul couplings ever released for the flip side as he found it impossible to choose which side to include so decided to go for both. "Ups And Downs" / "Living My Life (Day By Day)" were originally paired on the same single, recorded at New London Studios, Birmingham, AL, and released on Atlanta's Note label in 1974.
Richard Clyde Marks was a producer and guitarist from Atlanta, GA, and was very much a cult hero on the funk collector scene He died of cancer in 2016 and, according to Discogs, never having issued an album, or ever granting an interview. However, that has been rectified by Now-Again records who have released two compilations by him "Love Is Gone (The Lost Sessions: 1969-1977)" in 2020 and "Never Satisfied" in 2014 on which all three tracks on this single appear. Interestingly there is a version of Jimi Hendrix "Purple Haze" which is  very psychedelic.

Izipho Soul also released three of his recordings on a single last year "Love Is Gone" / "Don't Take It Out On Me" / "I Can't Stand" which all appeared on the Now-Again 2020 compilation.

As often the case, there are some interesting interconnections, as he co-wrote a song posted only a couple of weeks ago on Sound Gems by Vivilore Jordan, and a new cover of it by Beth Ann Wyn, "Put My Loving On You" and also co-wrote and produced the B side "Picking up Where She Left Off".

You can buy from your favourite purveyor of vinyl or direct from Hit And Run by sending £12 + £3 P&P (UK only and good for 3 records) via PayPal (Friends & family) to hitandrunsoul45@gmail.com
