The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 26 (Sep 2021 Wk 37)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples or new releases with a retro feel (Sep 2021 Wk 37). (In no particular order).

There were a lot of reissues to sift through this week as a couple of compilations were released and I could have easily filled the dozen with tracks from just two compilations.  However, there were also three good gospel tunes which I wanted to find a home for. There was also an album of Philly classics remixed but I didn't even go there!

Starting with the gospel tunes, a posthumous release by The Rance Allen Group and others by Jekalyn Carr and Gina Sedman.

A previously unreleased (on vinyl) double header from Betty Swann with a cover of The Isley Brothers Motown classic and another recorded by Justine 'Baby' Washington (1976) that Bette Swann actually recorded first but lay unreleased for 40 years almost completes the first half dozen.

A cover of Gloria Barnes 1971 song by Normal Sole (the Gloria Barnes version was also on one of the compilations) and another cover from the same year with Ted Winn's new version of "Inner City Blues". I 'havered' about the next one, which is a cover of probably my favourite Bob Marley song, by Allen Stone, which perhaps borders on pop, but I like how he's stripped it back.

Into the 'samplers' with the next couple. I have no idea (but would love to know .. someone out there must know? It sounds so familiar and I'll probably kick myself when it's revealed!) what Pablo Eskobear's "Tired Of Being Blue" samples. The next sample by Sevyn Streeter (the only contemporary tune in the list) is obvious from the start.

That just leaves two slots for reissues from the compilations. Well I couldn't leave out Darrow Fletcher as I love this guy's voice and almost everything he's recorded, such an overlooked artist apart from in rare soul circles, it's criminal. Choosing the final one from the remaining 31 compilation tracks was a lottery but I've gone with Philly's The Ethics (who later became Love Committee) with their 1969 outing on Vent.

Also, left out among over two dozen compilation tracks, worth a mention, is a cover of Leon Haywood's 1983 boogie/funk track "I'm Out To Catch" by Block Street Sound.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 33 (Sep 2021 Wk 37) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Sep 2021 Wk 37)
In no particular order other than tempo.

It's another 'cheat' this week as it's a 'baker's' dozen with an additional track as I couldn't decide which of Sophia Cruz's two tracks to include, so have included them both.

There are many tracks again this week from new names with a few making their debuts. Several of this week's selections have a stepper's vibe.

I haven't even thought about the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week until now, so let me think! The one that stands out most to me from the list, that hasn't already had some exposure, is Vince Bryant "Gitwitu".

The real surprise this week is the great track on Stokley's new album "Sankofa" which features Snoop Dogg which I almost skipped as I assumed that it would be littered with rap, but it is very soulful with no rap to be heard! It was a very close runner-up.

If it hadn't been for the Down To Earth album appearing last week the selection would have been Cha Star with "Vibe" which has picked up airplay since featuring it in last week's Dirty Dozen, so she gets an honourable mention again this week.

SoulStrutter Top 20 - 19th Aug 2021

The SoulStrutter Top 20 of the most viewed posts in the last 30 days (i.e. blog readers choices not mine!).

The gap on Carmichael Musiclover has been closed significantly by new entry Down To Earth but both of these are well ahead of third place by a factor of around four. The rise of Down To Earth has several contributory factors: 1/ it was the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week last week, 2/ the blog post was used by a record promoter when the album was serviced to 800 DJs/radio stations this week and 3/ was reposted by the group on their facebook page. It is almost certain to be #1 next week as Carmichael Musiclover will drop out as his 30 days will have expired, unless another amazing release materialises.

There are a few surprising entries at the foot of the table, but I just count the views!

Blog Statistics

I thought you might be interested in the blog stats each week so I'll also post them here. The table below shows the daily no. of visits to the blog along with the weekly total visits, average daily visits and total visits in the last 30 days.

I'd love to get these numbers even higher so please share, especially if you are an artist/label/DJ/promoter as Down To Earth is an example of what can happen. There was a weekend in July on which visitors exceeded 2,500 for four consecutive days. I'm not quite sure what was significant about that particular weekend?

I'm still trying to get a handle on Google Analytics but last week there were visitors from 52 different countries around the world with the top viewers coming from US (43%) and UK (33%) along with France, Brazil, Jamaica, Spain, Germany and Italy making up the lion's share of other nationalities.

The Global Soul Chart - 18th Sep 2021

Five new entries from Jazz Amadi, Ari Lennox, Reuben James Feat. Jaz Karis, Yummy Bingham and Marshella Muzic the highest at #9.

Only Elaine E’ssential, from last week's six new entries, has made much progress moving up seven to #10. If you listen to the podcast of the show (at around 61:18) you will hear Mr. Franklin being disbelieving of a comment made that the song was co-written by Sam Dees. So in order to clarify, I fact checked on BMI and the song is indeed registered to Sam L Dees. However, for 'belt & brace', I contacted Elaine to clarify as I thought perhaps he may have been credited for a sample of Atlantic Starr's "Am I Dreaming" (from "Radiant" 1980 which he wrote. If you listen to the linked sound file the intro melody from "Am I Dreaming" is sampled) and she confirmed with the following comment.

"Hello thanks for your write up. Yes Sam Dees is credited for the Sample & phrase, “Am I Dreamin’, Am I just Imagining you’re hear in my life”. I wrote every other lyric. Thanks for clarifying, I hope this helps."

Carmichael Musiclover stayed on top for the second week and fourth week on the chart.

My 'kiss of death' for Jay Diggs, Will Downing, Kim Tavar, Victoria Monét and Amaria to drop out of the chart all materialised as did one of two suggested from The Dirty Dozen to chart i.e. Marshella Muzic but not Wendy B.

I think it may also surprise Franklin (and other doubters) that Down To Earth is likely to make an appearance on the chart next week if the views on this blog and the general buzz around the album converts into plays from DJs.  The album was serviced to DJs/radio stations etc. on Wednesday this week using the review from this blog. The group asked for it not to be distributed as promos until after it's release last Friday (10 Sep). It already tops the Soul Buzz chart and I fully expect it to be at least in the Starpoint Breakers chart on Monday, if not a new entry on the full UK Soul Chart

UPDATE 20/09 Just been told that Down To Earth is #1 in Breakers Chart today. Now confirmed here.

As for next week, I predict all five fallers this week will drop out, but Mandee may cling on for another week as I think the London urban DJ's love it! They may be joined by Arjuna Oakes and possibly Brandy Haze who hasn't made a lot of progress moving up just one place. Jazz Amadi will go one way or the other but will hopefully survive as there are several worthy tracks on the "Late Bloomer" debut album. So we could have at least another six new entries next week.

Losers:
Victoria Monét, Kim Tavar, Amaria, Will Downing, Jay Diggs

Highest Risers:
B. Golden Feat. Rob Cunningham (+9), Elaine E’ssential Feat. Mistro (+7), Tracy Cruz (+3)

Biggest Fallers:
Earth Wind & Fire Feat. Lucky Daye (-9), Georgie Sweet (-9), Victor Haynes (-5)
