Roger Williams [2021-10-17] - The SoulSorts Radio Show [Starpoint #50]

The latest SoulSorts show hosted by Roger Williams and broadcast on Starpoint Radio Sunday 17th October 2021.

Another quality selection of the brand new releases and a few he's still catching up on since his sabbatical into the 90s! The emphasis being on quality and not just new for the sake of being new!

Roger's show is broadcast every Sunday between 22:00-00:00 (GMT) on Starpoint Radio playing his selection of the best new soul and jazz releases.

All podcasts are available from Podomatic and Mixcloud
Current show PodomaticMixcloudAmazon

Each week the weekly SoulStrutter "The Dirty Dozen Mix" is tagged onto the end of the broadcast show, which unfortunately, owing to the show's timing, will always be the previous week's mix.

The Sounds of Detroit [2021] - Oh How I Love Those Songs [Self Released]

A couple of weeks ago a re-recording of two sides by T.F.O. (The Floaters Orchestra), i.e. Ronnie Nelson, were released by Soul Intention in UK due on vinyl. Well he's back in action again on a new Temptations tribute track credited to The Sounds of Detroit featuring The Prolifics (from Detroit not the New Orleans outfit),  David Banks (Enchantment), Thique & Leon Franklin (The Dramatics) and  Ronnie Nelson  (T.F.O.).

The song is titled "Oh How I Love Those Songs" and, as said above, is a tribute song to The Temptations. It was written by Michael A. Sanders. It is much better than I expected it to be as many of these types of things are a bit 'over sentimental'.

I'm not sure who's on lead vocals but he has a strong voice.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 37 (Oct 2021 Wk 41) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Oct 2021 Wk 41)
In no particular order other than tempo.

Well it's been a pretty good week for new material and trying to narrow it down to just twelve has been difficult deciding what to leave out, so instead I've extended it to a dozen and a half.

The new single from the legendary Whispers deserved to be in but has been 'side lined' to the covers etc. dozen as it is a cover version. I could have selected virtually all the tracks from Ms. Kriss' excellent EP and multiple tracks from Em-Cee's album but again one has been put in the covers etc. dozen as it uses samples and actually most, if not all of, the album was recorded several years ago but some unreleased (e.g. at least five tracks were released on a 12" EP "Superstar The E.P." in 2004! and another two tracks were also released in 2005 and another in 2002).  Having already featured two tracks from Rob Ruhu's album last week (SoulStrutter Selection of the Week) another worthy track is included this week.

In terms of this week's Selection of the week then I think it has to go to Ms. Kriss's debut EP "Blacbuttafly" for the consistency of all tracks.

Unfortunately no places left for BeMyFisaco belatedly posted today, but perhaps one or two may feature next week?

BeMyFiasco [2021] - Where I Left You [The Foreign Exchange Music] (Full Album)

One 'missed' on Friday in the 'frantic Friday release rush' is the album "Where I Left You" from BeMyFiasco. I did give the 30 second samples a cursory listen but nothing appeared to 'grab me' on first flick through. After a discussion with a certain radio presenter I agreed to give it another listen and actually there are several good tracks on it. It just shows that 30 second samples are not enough to get a full appreciation of many tunes, especially when there are so  many releases to wade through!

The track that seems to be receiving most interest is "Love Feels", however "Through The Middle", "Caramel" and "Outside The Lines" are all  great tracks.

BeMyFiasco is actually Bianca Rodriguez from Dallas, TX. who's released around eight singles since 2016. This is her debut album. She featured on a single by Zo! & Tall Black Guy "Talkin' To Myself " in March this year

Derrick Sena & Senco Feat. Roxiie Reese [2021] - Invisible Tears [Self Released]

Derrick Sena is a up and coming producer from the Bay Area who I first came across back in May when he released "I Can't Help It" which featured as a SoulStrutter Selection of the Week.  Derrick subsequently got in touch and regularly sends new material to preview. Another release was "Show Me Love" along with an instrumental version of I Can't Help It titled "Triple Shot" which has some great 'Tower Of Power' like horns added. His latest is another song which features the incredible vocal talents of one Ms Roxiie Reese from New York.

His latest production is "Invisible Tearsoriginally posted last week with a couple of bonus tracks.

SoulStrutter Top 20 - 17th Oct 2021

The SoulStrutter Top 20 of the most viewed posts in the last 30 days (i.e. blog readers choices).

Down To Earth drop out of chart with their LP (30 days expired) but re-enter with a live track recorded at Ronnie Scott's in 2007.  Surprisingly Cornell CC Carter didn't make it to #1 but if I included the Gary Van Den Bussche interview with him it would be streets ahead. Candace Woodson's new single streaks in at #1 from nowhere as it was only posted four days ago!

Derrick Sena featuring Roxiie Reese enters the chart with an unreleased track which has now been released on Friday. Raja-Nee's follow up to "Come Get This Love" enters at #4 and Rob Ruha's album at #9.

The final new entry comes from The Kount featuring the 'eccentric' Marc Rebillet.

The real surprise is the Marvin Gaye duet with Beverley Knight which has received an incredible number of views, now more than Cornell CC Carter, so possibly not just limited to soul listeners?

Another surprise is Chanel Fyffe EP which is still in top 20 for the fourth week (it entered at #8 on 29 Sep)  as I've not seen it on any playlists.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 30 (Oct 2021 Wk 41)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples or new releases with a retro feel (Oct 2021 Wk 41). (In no particular order apart from tempo).

Starting with the reissues there are two tracks from the excellent Sweet Inspirations 66 track compilation, one also being a cover of Gladys Knight & The Pips Motown/Northern Soul track. A couple from Ira Raibon also released on vinyl.

One in the previously unreleased category, as it seems to have been recorded around 2012, and certainly a sampler is a track from Em-Cee which uses A Taste Of Honey's "Rescue Me". Masters At Work's Louie Vega samples Charles Johnson's 1980 modern soul classic "Never Had A Love so Good"

Covers from The Whispers releasing their version of Al Johnson's "It's Been Too Long" and The Journal on Barry White's 1977 hit.

Two retro sweet soul tunes from Ron Crowder & The Rolas also released on vinyl by Mike Noriega. Also in the retro category is, for me, the standout track on the new D. Saunders album which has surely got Northern soul appeal. The final track making up the dozen is a 70s retro Philly style instrumental by Poppy Sound.
