SoulStrutter Top 30 - 9th Jan 2022 (Week 01)

The SoulStrutter Top 30 of the most viewed posts in the last 30 days (i.e. blog readers choices).

The first chart of 2022 and the first since 19th Dec 2021 as it's a bit pointless over the festive period with little of consequence being released. With 21 days elapsed there are only 7 tracks remaining from the last chart, so basically we start 2022 with virtually a clean slate.

Jaszy Shavers seems to have benefited from remaining as SoulStrutter Selection of the Week throughout the period as no others were chosen. The re-promotion of Nicole Henry's jazz album of covers pushes it on to the top spot. It's also good to see TJ Taotua's album being appreciated.

There's a few high entries with tracks only posted in the last week: Sandra-Mae Lux, Castella and Ania Garvey & Binky Womack and five others which should probably do well in the weeks to come. Looking at the days since posting we will have at least a dozen new entries next week.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2022... Part 01 (Dec 2022 Wk 01) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Jan 2022 Wk 01)
In no particular order other than tempo.

Whist retaining the title "The Dirty Dozen" (until I come up with a more appropriate one) this year I will be extending the selections to one hour, so the number of tracks may vary from week to week. This week it contains 16 tracks, most have been released this week but there are a few 'hangovers' (no pun) from the festive period that got lost in the melee.

What I'll also attempt to do each week is highlight the album (or EP) of the week, as it will make it much easier at the end of the year reviewing the 'best of'. So with that in mind this week it was fairly easy and the selection is Mr. Mosley "R&B 'the way it use to be'" which has at least four great tracks and some others which may be 'growers'. The standout, the more I listen to it, is "Legendray" (deliberately or otherwise misspelt) included in this week's "The Dirty Dozen".

Had Lindsey Webster "I Didn't Mean It" been released this week it would surely have been SoulStrutter Selection of the Week, but as it's not released until next week that pleasure will be held over until next week unless something else special sees release. However, trying to choose this week's has not been an easy task. The shortlist is between Aliah Sheffield "I'm Never Drinking Again", Kelvin Evans feat. Lynita Renae "Spend The Night", Marcus Valentine "Just Say" (which I believe is technically a  reissue as it appeared on an EP in 2013), Paulyae "This Time", Asia Rainey "Good Morning". There are several others which get better with each listening and the classy Masha Mnjoyan  song "Garden of Eden" I'm really enjoying. So it's a bit of a lottery but I've gone for Kelvin Evans feat. Lynita Renae "Spend The Night"  as I think it may have more across the board appeal.

P.S. I have "The Bleeding Edge" A & B Lists still to post which I'll leave over until tomorrow as there is quite a lot to digest today with the other "Dirty Dozen" mopping up deferred releases for week 51 & 52 2021!

J-Voice [2022] - My Dream [4th Generations Productions]

J-Voice has released a whole batch of tunes in recent months and his latest on 5 Jan 2022 titled "My Dream" is the best of the bunch.

I'm unable to find anything further about him except from writers credits I assume him to be Jimmy Esau Brown and suspect he's from Africa from some of his material on YouTube.

Tanqueray Hayward [2022] - Complicated (The Realm Remix) [Self Released]

The new single from 'The Queen of Philadelphia' Tanqueray Hayward scheduled for her appearance at London's Jazz Cafe on 24 Jan with Alvin Garrett (which has now unfortunately been cancelled likely as a casualty of Covid) is due for release on 21 Jan 2022.

It's another Manny Rahelu remix following "Standing All Alone" in Oct 2021. This time of the lead track "Complicated" from her debut album "Definition Of A Woman" which has been given a steppers vibe.

I've also included a video message from Tanqueray reviewing her year.

Bennett [2022] - When It's Too Good (Clean) [Atlantic]

Bennett is a 23 year old artist from Connecticut who, prior to releasing her debut single "Never Yours", uploaded a cover of Jorja Smith's "I Am" on Soundcloud. The debut single attracted 1.3m Spotify streams without promotion which prompted her to drop out of college and pursue a career in music. After several self-releases, she was singed by Atlantic Records in 2020.

Her latest single "When It's Too Good' was released on 6 Jan 2022.

CASHMA [2022] - I Like Your Pants [Kalombo Records]

Cashma from Atlanta, GA, released her last single "Body Love" on 30 Nov and she's followed it up on 3 Jan 2022 with the oddly titled "I Like Your Pants" ... I wonder if it's the Y-Fronts that she prefers?

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 47 (Dec 2021 Wk 51 & 52) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Dec 2021 Wk 51 & 52)
In no particular order other than tempo.

There were no Dirty Dozens posted over the festive period (i.e. weeks 51 & 52) so here's a catch up of some of the best tunes released over the period - a double dozen of tracks released approx. between 19 Dec and 2 Jan.  A fresh dozen for the last week will also be posted separately.
