SoulStrutter Top 20 - 3rd Oct 2021

The SoulStrutter Top 20 of the most viewed posts in the last 30 days (i.e. blog readers choices).

Down To Earth stay at the top for the second week and I anticipate will stay there for the foreseeable future given the significant margin they are ahead by.

Last week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week from Tarrey Torae moves straight in at equal #2  with B. Golden but get's 'preference' as it has had fewer days to accumulate views.

Kenya Soulsinger's new EP and Jay King's new album are both new entries.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 35 (Oct 2021 Wk 39) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Oct 2021 Wk 38)
In no particular order other than tempo.

Another pretty mellow selection this week bringing you the more soulful side of this week's new releases.

I couldn't really decide between "Say Sorry" or "Body" from a nice five track EP by Arrion Jerod but plumped for the former in the end but both are equally as good.

The BJ Kemp EP released last Monday seems to be causing a bit of a stir, so the best track from that is included.

A nice bit of UK blue-eyed soul from Elli Ingram from Brighton is a late comer although it has been around for over a month (30 Aug 2021).

This week's SoulStrutter Selection selected itself as it had an immediate impact on first hearing and PJ Morton's "Please Don't Walk Away" was posted instantly on Friday afternoon on release.

UPDATE: One that slipped through the net that ought to have been in the selection was Gerod Rayborn's "Show Me Some Love" but it was missing from the Spotify shortlist beforehand and therefore got overlooked .. so I've added it.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 28 (Oct 2021 Wk 39)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples or new releases with a retro feel (Sep 2021 Wk 39). (In no particular order apart from tempo).

The reissues this week include the first digital issue of Mike De'cole's "Nights Like This" (only previously available on 7" vinyl) and a pre-EP reissue of Cherise's "Remedy".  Izipho Soul reissued two tracks from Derek Damian's 2013 EP "The Inception" on a vinyl 7". Lina Nikol released her debut album which includes a 2018 single she recorded with Frank McComb. Izipho Soul have reissued Derek Damian's "Whatcha Wanna Do" on 7" vinyl for the the second time as the first issue sold out within 48 hours of release in 2019.

The New Mastersounds merge the three previous vocals for "A Brighter Day" into what they call a mashup, so either a remix or a reissue.

Kem has remixed "Not Before You" from last years "Love Always Wins" album which is included as a bonus track on the deluxe edition of the album released last week. Another remix of a 2019 track by Nichelle Colvin which features Gerald Albright on sax.

Three covers from Butcher Brown & Alex Isley with Patrice Rushen's "Remind Me", DJ Jazzy D does Andre Lee's "Stepping With You" and The MILF do a pretty good job on Creative Source/EWF "Can't Hide Love"

To complete the dozen I've added the new single from Alax Puddu "Call Me" as it has a retro feel.

Ernie & The Family Mckone Feat. Valerie Etienne [2021] - In The Thick Of It [Boogie Back]

The latest release due from Ernie Mckone is a cover of Brenda Russell's "In The Thick Of It" from her debut self-titled album  from 1979.  Assisting Ernie is Valerie Etienne who was with Ernie in the band Galliano in the 90s. Since then Valerie has been backing Jamiroquai and Incognito and is lead singer in Bluey‘s Citrus Sun..

The single is due for release on Friday (8 Oct 2021)

I've include a live recording of the song which Brenda Russell performed in Japan (possibly 1992?).

Back in 2012 Joey Negro (aka Dave Lee) also did a version with Angela Johnson on vocals.

Kayla Williams [2021] - Love Letters [Self Released] (Full Album)

Kayla Williams is originally from Pasco, WA now living in Dallas, TX. she's been around since 2017 having released a handful of singles since then but released her first full length album "Love Letters" on 24 Sep 2021 which contains ten songs which she describes as neo-gospel.

There are several good tracks with the standouts, for me, being the title track "Love Letters", "I Betcha" and "Make Me First".

She released a single titled "Love Letters I Betcha" on 2 Sep 2021 which is actually "I Betcha".

As is often the case her catalogue has been merged with other artist(s) with the same name on the DSPs.
