The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Part 28 (Aug 2021 Wk 32) Spotify Playlist

My selection of the best releases this week (Aug 2021 Wk 32)
In no particular order other than tempo.

A very slow week for new material last week with not very much of significance turning up until Friday and, what I regard as, the best release of the week only showing up yesterday.

Like last week there are some 'good' tunes without any particularly standing out from the crowd. However, although some tunes grow on you, occasionally one hits you as soon as you first hear it and that was the case for me with Josh Berkeley's new single which motivated me to explore his back catalogue and I wasn't disappointed. So, he is the SoulStrutter Selection of the Week.

One that is certainly a grower is Ny'Aira "Tyme" which I expect to do well, but sadly I don't think many are going to get behind Josh Berkeley which is a shame.

Lady Blackbird has been assigned to the Covers Dozen (as it is a cover version) and I've also put Rita Ray and Yola in there as well, as although they are both new releases, they both have a retro feel.

The Dirty Dozen - The Best Of 2021... Covers, Reissues, Remixes & Samples Part 21 (Aug 2021 Wk 32)

My selection of this week's best cover versions, remixes, reissues, previously unreleased and new songs using samples (Aug 2021 Wk 32). (In no particular order).

There weren't sufficient covers etc. to make up a dozen again this week so I've added a few retro tracks to make up the twelve.

Two reissues Phil Perry and a reworking of a 1986 track from Loose Ends

Three covers from The New Administration (Dyke & The Blazers), Jennifer Hudson (Aretha Franklin), Lady Blackbird (Tim Harden)

Three samplers Atiya (Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes), India Ivonna (Roy Ayers Ubiquity) and June Jissle & Heyssis (Aaliyah).

A remix from Lukas Setto.

To make up the dozen I've added Yola and Rita Ray as, although new releases, they have a retro feel and I'm taking a liberty with the final track, one I only came across this week from 2015, by Sex On Toast which has an 80s yacht soul feel.

Onyx Collective [2021] - Tango [Juliet Records]

Onyx Collective are a fluid and enigmatic, experimental jazz collective of musicians from all five boroughs of New York formed by saxophonist Isaiah Barr in 2016 who make impromptu appearances rather than announcing them.

They've released around half a dozen or so EPs/Albums all predominantly using names on New York streets/areas e.g. 2nd Avenue Rundown, Lower East Suite pts1,2,&3, Manhattan Special and mainly consist of live recordings. Lower East Suite Pt 3 was their first full studio recorded album.

Their latest single "Tango" was released last Thursday (12 Aug 2021). They will probably be pleased that I would say that it's difficult to categorise, although I wouldn't categorise it as jazz, although there are some jazz elements, sounds rather pop/funk to me with rock guitar towards the end!

The Global Soul Chart - 14th Jul 2021

Five new entries this week, all of which have already been posted. D.Folks is rooted in second place with Leela James retaining the top spot for the second week.

All last weeks eight new entries have climbed the chart with all, except Elijah Blake, taking or retaining a place in the top 10 with Samm Henshaw edging nearer to the top at #3 ... could he make it?

Quite a poor week for new releases until Friday. A few to watch out for are the new releases from Will Downing, Victor Haynes and Kim Tavar which will all (predictably) receive heavy rotation.

It would be nice to see some more soulful tunes, from less well known names, get an airing such as Cherise, Anthony Lofties, Lady Blackbird, Char Elizabeth, Josh Berkeley, Rita Ray as so many good soulful tunes recently haven't made the cut e.g. Penzillathegreat, Eugene Cole, Alanna Royale, Eric Roberson, Izo FitzRoy etc. and what about several cuts from GarciaWalker&Durrell album "Now That You're Gone" is a stunner!  ... look "outside the box"! How the highest climber, Don-E, can be #4 (very average IMO) and GWD is #1 on Starpoint and is yet to get a look in is beyond comprehension to me as there's not a bad track on the whole album ... a bit of London (DJ) bias creeping in? ...  just my opinion!

Losers:
Tygressa, Regi Myrix Feat. NexXxUP, Hil St. Soul & Noel Gourdin, The Realm, Akosia

Highest Risers:
Don-E (+12), Kevin Ross  (+9), Elijah Blake Feat. Trinidad James (+6)

Biggest Fallers:
Ms. Kriss  (-14), Portrait (-14), Jewell Booker (-12)

Dawkins & Dawkins [2021] - Never Gets Old Faith & Favor Vol.2 [Legacy Music Group] (Full Album)

The second volume of "Never Gets Old" "Faith & Favor" (released 30 Jul 2021) isn't getting as much love as the first volume (which reached #2 on Global Soul chart last month), but it needs a few listens before you dismiss it completely as there are a couple of good tracks. One ("Come By Here") has already been posted last week, another worth a second listen is "Outta My Way".

I believe that there is a series of four albums, so watch out for the next instalment in a couple of weeks.

JGrrey Feat. Finn Askew [2021] - Lavish [Self Released]

JGrrey's (aka Jennifer Clarke) latest single "Lavish" (released 13 Aug 2021) features 20 year old Finn Askew an emerging artist from Wellington, Somerset.

Her last single "Down" was featured here in April. Since then she featured on a single release with Jay Lewn called "Still Blue".

Although not as instant as "Down", I think the new single could be a 'grower'?
