Bea Anderson [2022] - Pieces [Self Released]

London born singer/songwriter, and BRIT School graduate, Bea Anderson debuted in Feb 2021 with a single "Easy" which she followed with a six track EP "Eden" in May the same year. In Jan 2022 she released her second single, "Mirror Mirror", which garnered the support of BBC Radio 1Xtra and several playlists on Spotify, Apple Music and Hunger.

Her first release since then is "Pieces" which was released two weeks ago on 11 Nov which I would describe as soulful R&B. This Friday (2 Dec '22) she is releasing a live version of the self-written song along with a supporting video which we've been given a sneak preview of, but can't share with you until Friday, but here is the studio version and video to give you a taste.

She says about the song "Pieces is probably my most vulnerable body of writing as it regards my realisation of choosing true love over the attraction to a man’s ego. I wrote one of the strongest lyrics I think I'll ever write in this song - 'call me crazy, butterflies save me - from myself, but from his ego mainly'".

Bea draws inspiration for her early experiences of Gospel with her passion for R&B groups like Destiny’s Child, Cherish and Boys II Men as well as influences from artists such as H.E.R., Lauryn Hill and Solange.

Sincerely Wilson [2022] - June [Self Released]

Sincerely Wilson is a singer/songwriter/producer from north London. Since releasing two EPs and a handful of self-produced singles since 2012, he has released his first single this year and his first since Jan 2020.

"June" was co-written and produced with Yves Fernandez and Jake Edwards-Wood.  Wilson tells us that the song "addresses the feeling of wanting to rediscover and reside in a place of contentment and that June represents the light at the end of the tunnel".

He wrote the lyrics when the number of Covid cases in London were consistently breaking previous records and all mass gatherings were cancelled. "It was a dark time that felt like we were stuck in a cycle of a never-ending Winter. When I first heard the guitar loop in the chorus I fell in love with the chords - they reminded me of summer. This is where the 'June' metaphor was born as a representation of light, hope and happiness. The aim of the song it to give insight into winning the battle against the negative voice in my head. Yes, we all have dark days/seasons but with time and perseverance, things change".

It's a contemporary soul/R&B ballad with rich tones.

Will Downing - A Profile

Wilfred Downing was born on this day in 1963 in Brooklyn, NYC, and is therefore celebrating his 59th birthday today. He is married to singer Audrey Wheeler, who was a member of Unlimited Touch and also released two solo albums in 1987 and 1991.
He graduated from high school with Kedar Massenburgh who was later to become president of Motown. Downing released one of his 26 albums "All The Man You Need" on Motown in 2000. Other alumni from his high school include Clive Davis, Stephanie Mills and Barbara Streisand.

Before embarking on a solo career he worked with the likes of The O'Jays, Gerald Albright, Regina Belle, Rachelle Ferrell, Rose Royce, Jennifer Holliday, Kool & The Gang, Nona Hendryx, Mica Paris, Billy Ocean, Mariah Carey, Billy Joel. His career began to take off when he met producer Arthur Baker in the mid 80s and became a member of Wally Jump Junior & The Criminal Element who had a few minor hits in the UK but not in US.

His first solo, self-titled, album arrived in 1988 after singing to Island Records which produced his first hit, a cover of Deniece Williams' "Free" which was followed by his biggest hit so far with a version of John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" which reached #4 on US Dance Chart and #14 on the UK pop chart. I think it may be fair to say that his music seems to be more popular this side of the Atlantic as he has so far had 9 UK national pop chart entries whilst, unbelievably non of his US R&B entries have crossed over onto the Billboard Hot 100!

To date, according to his website, he has released 25 albums with his 26th, "Pieces", due on Valentines Day 2023. I guess they must be classifying his 3 EP's from 2011/12 Yesterday, Tomorrow, Today as an album.

Dave Mascall [2022] - Back to Scat [Self Released]

Dave Mascall is back after a short absence this year serving up a slice of 125 BPM Latino House "Back To Scat" which is full of piano montuno, Latin brass section, trumpets, percussion with some scat vocals and the added bonus of some great guitar from the man himself.

This release comes with 2 mixes, the standard Radio Edit at 4.17 and the extended Johnny Layton Latin Mix at 4.57

As normal, with Dave's releases, they are only available directly from DaveMascallMusic.com

Dave Mascall is from Southend (UK) and is a versatile guitarist and a prolific composer and producer often collaborating with other like minded vocalists and instrumentalists.

He began playing guitar at the age of 14 inspired by Jimi Hendrix, Ritchie Blackmore and the like, but changed direction when he witnessed the late Joe Pass on TV and started to develop his jazz playing skills. He now cites George Benson, Larry Carlton and Lee Ritenour as influences.

His first professional music work began in Canada and then returning to the UK he played guitar with vocalist Jackson Sloan in Rent Party, Graeme Culham big band, alto sax player John Pugh and jazz/funk/fusion band Export with brass player Graham Hunter. He then spent subsequent years completing the line up of various different bands and at the same time performing with visiting American soul artists, notably: Junior Walker, Jean Carn, Terry Callier, GC Cameron (Detroit Spinners), The Trammps, Randy Brown, Harvey Scales, The Contours, Betty Levette and many more.

He stood in for smooth jazz artist Peter White for a brief period playing in the backing band with top latin percussionist Snowboy for ex Matt Bianco singer, Basia. He has toured at home and abroad with Sister Sledge, George McCrae, Boney M, Odyssey, The Drifters and others and and has also worked with jazz and soul singer Lol Williams of Down To Earth and has played shows with The Commitments and the Real Thing.

The last few years Dave has been prolific with six ACID LOUNGE albums.

Rita Ray [2022] - A Life of Its Own [Funk Embassy Records] (Full Album)

I make no apology for loving this young lady's voice. Ever since her debut album "Old Love Will Rust" in 2019 (which sold out of two vinyl pressings), Rita Ray has enjoyed a steady rise on the contemporary soul scene. Her songwriting, voice and grand productions in studio as well as live settings are a thing of beauty. Her talent has been recognised in her home country by being awarded Estonian Jazz Awards, "Young Jazz Talent of the Year" 2021.

With style and grace, after pre-releasing three singles from the album, "Love Ain't The Same" (Mar '21), "No Greater Love", (Aug '21), "Please Wait For Me" (Nov '22), Rita invites you into her personal space once again with her sophomore album "A Life Of Its Own" which was released yesterday (28 Nov 2022). With lush cinematic string arrangements and vintage instrumentation the album is the lovechild of a lifelong affair with music by Miss Ray and her first-class band.

The album opens with the beautiful lead single "Love Ain't The Same" followed by the second single from the album, the retro, "No Greater Love". Then comes four southern soul style tracks in the Bill Withers vein, "So Sweet" and "Ms. Steal-Your-Man" parts 1 & 2 (on the latter getting down and funky) and "Sing It With Love". The penultimate track "Needless To Say" is a more sultry and soulful bluesy/jazz affair with the album closing with a soulful ballad "Please Wait For Me" which her latest single (released 18 Nov).

If you're looking for dance tracks then you will be disappointed as this is authentic, honest, soul music, albeit of the blue-eyed variety, played by real musicians with no electronic gimmickry or computer wizardry to be heard.

Please note that the album is also available via Bandcamp, so if you're planning on buying then this Friday is Bandcamp Friday where Bandcamp waives it's normal fees meaning that the music creators receive more of the proceeds.

Many thanks to Henrik Ehte at Funk Embassy Records for servicing the album.
