The Ton3s Feat. Mr. TalkBox [2022] - Thank You [Ghetto Allstars]

The first release by the trio formerly known as The Hamiltones since their debut album as The Tons3s  "We Are The Ton3s" is "Thank You" featuring Mr. Talkbox released on Friday (28 Oct).

The song was recorded in 2018 for Snoop Dogg's album "Bible Of Love" but didn't make the final cut. The featured artist, Mr. Talkbox, will give you a clue as to how this one is going to sound i.e. a retro late 70s/early 80s feel with vocoder! It's effective though, and I don't normally appreciate the electronic effects, a dancefloor winner!

Midtown Assembly [2022] - Don't Walk Away [Glamp Rd Records #GAP 9321]

Available on 27 Nov 2022 on limited edition 7" vinyl is Midtown Assembly "Don't Walk Away" from Glamp Rd Records which has been a big Northern Soul tune of recent years covered up as Kim Weston (covering up a record is a practice used since the inception of Northern Soul whereby a false artist name, and sometimes title, is used by DJs in order to hide the true identity of a record to retain exclusivity to it).

It distinctly reminds me of something else which I had running through my head which I couldn't place at first .... but .. wait for it .. I think it's similar to Madonna's "Express Yourself" which will have some running for cover!

It has a Motown style backbeat and sounds like a blue-eyed singer to these ears. I've no idea as to the background of the record, whether it's a new recording or something from the vaults. However, the label shows a copyright and publishing date of 2012 and one of the writers is Steve Levine. Whether or not this is the same Steve Levine who produced Culture Club in the 80s, again I'm not certain.  At least it's not the other Levine of Motorcity fame! The other writer is another Brit, keyboardist Terry Devine-King, who has worked with The Style Council and composes for TV, film and advertising. So all indications are that this is a recent British production.

It's the second release from the label run by Ged Parker, the other being Jon Allen & The Skinner Brothers "Feel Alright" in March 2022 which, unbelievably, is already selling for up to £175 on Discogs! So, as these are limited to 300 copies with no pre-order available, you will need to be on the ball to grab one when released on 27 Nov from Glamp Rd!

Thanks to Karl 'Chalky' White for highlighting this release.

Miriah Avila [2022] - Slow Change Up [Industry Music Group #IMG 1025]

The latest vinyl release from Industry Music Group is a track released (and posted) digitally in Jan '22 by Miriah Avila "Slow Change Up".

It's a cover of a song originally released in 1972 by Sweet Breeze on Willpower which has been receiving spins on the UK Sunday rare soul sessions in recent years. I discovered 'another' version from 2019 by Mike & Margaret. To me they sound identical (what do you think?) and with the writer being Michel E. Felder, I wonder if Mike is Michael Felder and together they were both originally a duo or in the group Sweet Breeze who don't appear to have released anything else (under that name at least)?

Digging a bit deeper, there is a Michael Felder who was a member of Mike & Bill (Daniels) who cut a few singles in the 70s including "Where Do I Stand". Whether or not it is the same person I'm not sure.

The Sweet Breeze record is pretty scarce as none have sold on Discogs and only three are listed on Popsike the last selling for almost £350 in Jun 2013. Even one with a hairline crack sold for almost $400! The flip side is pretty good too, "Good Thing", a soulful, funky dance track (also included below).

Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds [2022] - Get Down / Love-Itis [Numero Group #5747]

A Numero Group digital reissue of two sides by Harvey Scales & The Seven Sounds released on Magic Touch in 1967.

The group was formed in Milwaukee in 1961 by Harvey Scales and  Albert Vance.  In addition to Vance who was bassist and bandleader, The Seven Sounds were Rudolph Jacobs (guitar), Bill Stonewall (drums), with a horn section of Monnie Smith (trumpet), Bill Purtie (bari sax),  Ray Armstead (tenor sax) and Mel Taylor (tenor sax). They released around a dozen singles under this name between 1962-72, and some as The Seven Seas, with Scales himself releasing several more billed as a solo artist, so whether or not the group was still backing him I don't know.

Scales & Vance's biggest claim to fame is for writing Johnnie Taylor's 1976 #1 hit "Disco Lady" which was the very first platinum selling record in RIAA history. Scales was also a member of The Esquires ("Get On Up" fame) for a short period who also originated in Milwaukee, initially based around the Moorer family Betty, Gilbert, Alvis and Perry, before relocating to Chicago where they went to audition for Curtis Mayfield but ended up with signing to Bill 'Bunky' Sheppard's Bunky Records (which succeeded Constellation after it closed down in 1966) and hit with their first single "Get On Up" in 1967 (#3 R&B / #11 Hot 100).

The single "Get Down" / "Love-Itis" was their only hit reaching #32 R&B. "Love-Itis" was covered by The J Geils Band in 1975.

Scales is possibly best known in modern soul circles for his album only track "Universal Love" (co-written with Melvin Griffin) from his 1978 "Confidential Affair" album on Casablanca also recorded as a single the same year by Z.Z. Hill on Columbia.
