Steve Aggasild [2022-09-20] - SoulAndJazzFlavas [Soul Groove Radio]

This Tuesday's episode of  Soul & Jazz Flavas show from 'The Soul Master' Steve Aggasild on Soul Groove Radio 20th Sep 2022.

With the death on the Queen all programming on Soul Groove Radio since 9th Sep has been mellow and downbeat, so this is the first show of new material since 6th Sep with the majority of the playlist getting it's first airing by Steve and some possibly their first on radio.

Steve does two shows a week on Soul Groove Radio Mon 18:00-20:00 (BST) and Tue 22:00-24:00 (BST). If you have yet to listen then please do take a listen as he is one of the best UK soul radio presenters around with a 40 year pedigree.

Corrine Drewery (Swing Out Sister) - A Profile

Martin Jackson ex member of Swing Out Sister was 67 on 30 Aug and today is Corrine Drewery's 63rd  birthday. Jackson formed Swing Out Sister with Andy Connell who were later joined by vocalist Corrine Drewery. Prior to forming the group he was a member Manchester band Magazine formed by Howard Devoto of The Buzzcocks. Connell was with The Immediates and A Certain Ratio. Drewery had sung with Working Week.
Swing Out Sister's first single was "Blue Mood" in 1985 which did nothing but they followed it with "Breakout" which was a top 10 hit in UK (#4) and US (#6) and a #1 on US Adult Contemporary chart. They had a run of ten Top 100 hits between 1986-1994 with six top 40 and two top 10 hits, but none achieved the same success as "Breakout". In 1992 they covered Barbara Acklin's "Am I The Same Girl" which was a vocal version of Young Holt Unlimited instrumental hit "Soulful Strut" and their third biggest hit reaching #21.

Their 1987 debut album "It's Better To Travel" was a UK #1. They followed it with "Kaleidoscope World" which reached #9. Their third album "Get in Touch with Yourself" got to #27 which was their last album chart entry despite releasing seven further albums between 1994-2018.

I suspect that the group's 'soulful' sound was influenced by Corrine Drewery who I was at school with and who, like many of us at the time, was into Northern Soul. She was a fashion designer and model prior to joining the group. Connell and Jackson were previously in post-punk groups.

Rather than a playlist, I've posted videos for all ten of their UK chart hits.

Marcia Hines [2022] - You Gotta Let Go / Don’t Let The Grass Grow [Seelctor Series #SS7005P]

Marcia Hines was born in Boston, MA, in 1953 but emigrated to Australia where she played the lead role in the musical "Hair" aged just 16.

She released her debut album "Marcia Shines" on Wizard in 1975. The album produced four singles. One of those singles "You Gotta Let Gowas released in 1976 and 'discovered' around the end of the century /early noughties and got spins on the modern soul scene and, like many modern soul discoveries, soon crossed over onto Northern Soul dancefloors.

The single is very hard to find as it was only released in Australia and Italy and now commands upwards of £500 even though the track is quite easily found on the album for between £10-£20 (even though only released in Australia, New Zealand and Italy). The Italian single release was the B side to "Jumping Jack Flash" on Dig It which is also pretty scarce.  It was reissued on 7" in 2014 on Mukatsuku Records with Jackie Wilson "You Keep Me Hanging On" on the flip on a release titled "Lost Soul & Funk Gems Volume One".

It's latest incarnation is a new 7" vinyl reissue from Selector Series who are reissuing it as their fifth single release available from 21 Oct 2022 which includes the original B side "Don’t Let The Grass Grow".

The main side was written by Teddy Randazzo and Victoria Pike whose names may be know to Northern Soul followers as they also jointly wrote several other well know recordings on the scene such as Little Anthony & The Imperials "Better Use Your Head", "Gonna Fix You Good", Sheila Anthony "Livin' In Love", Porgy & The Monarchs "Think Twice Before You Walk Away", Larry Santos / Frankie Valli "Can't Get You Off My Mind", Kiki Dee "On A Magic Carpet Ride" and Derek Martin "Soul Power", "Breakaway" as well as the deep soul ballad "You Blew It Baby".

Hines is still performing today and has released around fourteen albums her last "Amazing" in 2014.

DJ Kool Keith [2022-09-20] - Soulful Slow Jams [Soul Radio Coast2Coast]

The Soul Emperor's Soulful Slow Jams show broadcast on L.A. station Soul Radio Coast 2 Coast Mon/Tue (19/20 Sep 2022).

Well as KK has played two tracks from it, I couldn't miss another opportunity to remind you that Raja-Nee's new album "The Sovereign of 1742" is not only available on CD but also now on signed, coloured vinyl, email soulstrutter@gmail.com if you require either. Raja-Nee does an excellent job covering the Bacharach & David song sung by many heavyweights including Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Shirley Bassey, Barbara Streisand, The Dells and of course 5th Dimension on which Marilyn McCoo took lead vocals on the original platinum selling version which reached #2 on Hot 100.

I posted Instant Funk's "I Got My Mind Made Up" last week which is claimed to be the first commercially available 12" as the ones prior to that were promo only. It is claimed on Discogs that The Philly Devotions were the first to release a 12" in 1975 for "I Just Can't Make It (Without You)". Given that the one listed is a white label promo and I can't see an issued release then, if this is correct, it must mean the first promo 12".

The record played by KK was their first single from 1973 on Philly label Bry-Wek which has only three singles listed and the first two are from The Philly Devotions and both were written by Zip Johnson and arranged by Larry Dixon and recorded at the famed Sigma Sound Studios.

They had their biggest hit with the follow-up "I Just Can't Say Goodbye" which scraped into the Hot 100 at #95, followed by "We're Gonna Make It" (#67 R&B) and a disco version of Little Anthony & The Imperials' "Hurts So Bad" (#94 R&B) all mixed by Tom Moulton and produced by John 'The Monster' Davis.

Coincidentally, or not, the third single listed for Bry-Wek is by Tapestry, "Yeah Yeah Girl", the same group as the one played by KK which he has dated as 1967 but 45Cat lists it as 1970. It has a copyright date on the label for 1967, however the previous release / cat. no. by The Futures is dated 1970 on 45Cat and 1971 on Discogs. So, given that the remainder of their material is dated 1973-76, then 1970/71 looks more likely. They were another Philly group and released around six singles in total, none of which received any chart action.

To add more intrigue/interest, The Philly Devotions also recorded the song as the B side to their second single on Bry-Wek.

DJ Kool Keith has two shows per week, his Soulful Vibes show Sun 12:00-14:00 (BST/UK Time) on Soul Groove Radio and his Soulful Slow Jams show on Soul Radio Coast 2 Coast 22:00 PDT (Tue 06:00 BST in UK).
