Global Soul Chart 13th Aug 2022 (Week 32)

13th Aug 2022
The Global Soul chart broadcast on Sat 13th Aug as it is every Saturday between  5pm-7pm (GMT) on Global Soul Radio.

Each week around a dozen or more 'Breakers' are interspersed with chart entries. These will be posted separately.

Jaszy Shavers & Tavaras Jordan "Carolina Soul" EP lasted just one week in the top spot being replaced by the highest new entry last week at #5 Avery*Sunshine and her "Four Songs & a Bootleg" LP.

Yet again there are six new entries, the highest, not surprisingly, last week's SoulStrutter Selection of the Week B. Golden with his debut album "Feelings" in at #5. I have a feeling that he will replace Avery*Sunshine on top next week.

I don't fancy James Iwa's chances of surviving another week and am surprised it's in the chart at all as it hasn't been posted here as I don't think it's good enough. Surely there are better tunes around, do you want me to name them? Lynita Renea, Rina Chanel,  Empress LOF,  LOKRE and yes Beyonce (but of course that wouldn't be 'cool') for starters along with a tune that was posted here weeks ago (23 Jul) before anyone else latched onto it by reina which is only now beginning to get attention.

Two former #1s left the chart, Jamison Ross and Rose Gold along with Toy Taha who got stuck at #2.

Once again all of the top 10 were posted on SS on day of release except two which were posted the day after. So SS can never be accused of following the herd!

Summary: 6 risers, 7 fallers, 1 non-mover and 6 new entries

New Entries: Aquakultre (18), James Iwa (17), Esnc (16), Cherri V (14), Sipprell (12)

Highest Risers: Secret Rendezvous, AR Santiago (+7)

Biggest Fallers: ThingsGetBetter (-8), Strawberry (-6), Ms. Kriss (-6)

Losers:  Jamison Ross, Court LeuVen, King Sis, Toy Taha, Yuna, Rose Gold

Cameo Holliday [2022] - Brown Liquor Music [EarCrack Productions] (Full EP)

Here's one for the more traditionalists by a new name to me and the blog, Cameo Holliday from Omaha, NE. He has released six projects to date since 2018, most are five track EPs and one full length album.

His latest is another five tracker, "Brown Liquor Music", released today (15 Aug 2022). I'd describe it as traditional bluesy, southern style deep soul with a contemporary twist. All songs are self written and released on his own EarCrack Productions.

Well written, well sung and well produced, authentic soul music, what more do you want? If forced to choose, I'd select "Sweet Love" as my choice cut.

The Lovelites - A Profile

One of my favourite 'unsung' girl groups just has to be Chicago's The Lovelites. I thought I'd already posted a feature on them but, although they have appeared several times on the blog, they haven't been given a proper profile so it's time to correct that.
Like many others, possibly, my first introduction to them was via their big Northern Soul tune "Get It Off My Conscience" in the mid 70s which was released on their own logo Lovelite in 1975. Such was it's popularity that it gained a UK release on John Anderson's Grapevine label in 1978. It was a bit of a more funky departure from their earlier sweet soul sound and was their last recording.

As is, sadly, so often the case, despite the quality of their recordings, only two singles made it into the R&B chart, "How Can I You Tell My Mom & Dad" (#15 R&B #60 Hot 100 1969) and "My Conscience" (#36 R&B 1971).

They were formed in 1967 and originally consisted of sisters Patti Hamilton and Rozena Petty and their friend Barbara Peterman. They recorded their first single in 1967 for the local Chicago label, Bandera Records. After this single Peterman left the group in 1968, and was replaced by Ardell McDaniel.

Their next single "How Can I Tell My Mom & Dad" first appeared on Lock Records. It was about teen pregnancy, a taboo subject in the 60s. The song was written by Patti Hamilton and produced by ex Chi-Lite Clarence Johnson who would later manager the group. The single did well locally and gained them a contact with MCA subsidiary Uni who reissued the single which did well enough for them to release their sole album "With Love From The Lovelites" in 1970.

Deniece Williams was briefly a member but left when asked to join Stevie Wonder's Wonderlove.  Joni Berlman replaced Petty in 1970 leaving only Patti Hamilton as an original member.

After leaving Uni, Johnson set up their own imprint Lovelite and their first release on the logo, "My Conscience", in Nov 1970 was a top 40 R&B hit. After the single Rhonda Grayson replaced McDaniel in 1971.

There were two further releases on Lovelite, one a cover of the best song ever recorded by Martha & The Vandellas "My Baby Loves Me" as  Patti & The Lovelites before they signed to Cotillion. The first release on the label was a cover of a Northern Soul classic recorded by Keanya Collins "Barnabus Collins - Love Bandit" in 1969 (written by Collins under the alias Renee Marks) shortened to just "Love Bandit". Only one more single was released on Cotillion before they were back on their own label with "Love So Strong" which was picked up by 20th Century in 1973.The group released just one more single, again on Lovelite,  which was the one picked up on by the Northern Soul scene from 1975.

To my knowledge there are three compilations of their material "This Love Is Real" (1994), "The Lovelite Years" (1999) and "Sisters of Soul - The Sweeter Voices of Soul" (2012) which contains 20 of their songs along with 8 by 70s group The Fuzz from Washington D.C. who also had a big Northern Soul tune "I'm So Glad" (included on the comp) which got a released in UK on the Pye Disco Demand series in 1974.

The two final tracks are oddities, one a cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" by The Passionettes which was a 1970 Uni recording on the flip side to "Sister Watch Yourself". The other by Pat & Pam who were the teenage twin daughters of WVON DJ Lucky Cordell and nothing to do with Patti Hamilton. I guess the connection is that the song was written by C.B. Allen (Charles Bertrand Allen who was also a member of Shades Of Brown) who wrote some songs for The Lovelites and also for Deniece/Denise Chandler (aka Niecy Deniece Williams).

There was another New York girl group with The Lovelites name who recorded only one single under the name on Phil Specter's Phi-Dan in 1965 and later changed their name to The Jades.

Victor Willis [2015] - Follow Through [Harlem West Records #HWRCD 1001]

I don't think you would ever guess from this song that Victor Willis was a member of the Village People (he was the one dressed as a Police/Naval officer).  There was no such group initially as it was a studio project formed by a couple of French producers who recruited Willis to sing background vocals on some songs they had written. They released the first eponymously titled album Village People (taking the name from the Manhattan's Greenwich Village) and such was it's success that they they had to find members for live appearances and several dancers were recruited to dance around Willis.

The song "Follow Through" is from his only solo album "Solo Man" released on CD in 2015. However it was a previously unreleased album recorded for Casablanca in 1979 after he left Village People. You have to ask how on earth something of this quality could be left in the can for 36 years? It still sounds fresh to me now 43 years later!

It seems that after Willis' departure from the group, who were also signed to Casablanca, their sales plummeted and the label dropped them. Willis' contract was still with Village People and apparently the album got caught up in the contractual wrangles. Willis eventually got the rights to the tapes in 1981 and then they went missing reappearing in 2007.

Whilst the album was eventually released in 2015, as of 2019 it is no longer available on CD or digital, so to find one you'll need to search the second hand market (none currently available on Discogs). There are another three half decent ballads ("I Struck It Rich", "Could It Be You" and "Yes I Can"), but the rest of the material, as you may expect, is quite lame disco stuff.

The sound clip from YouTube is the full 5:54 album version. I believe that a sub 4 min Radio Edit may have been released.

Thanks to Gary Van Den Bussche for playing this on his lunchtime Starpoint Radio show last week which is what has prompted its posting.

Frederick Knight [1975] - I Betcha Didn't Know That [Truth #TRA-3216]

Frederick Knight is celebrating his 77th birthday today. His only UK hit and only Billboard Hot 100 hit was "I've Been Lonely For So Long" in 1972. The song was actually recorded first by Rita & The Soulettes as a reggae version in 1971. Rita was Rita Marley wife of Bob Marley.

A song of his that has always stuck in my mind is one he wrote with Sam Dees (which has got his signature all through it) and recorded in 1975 on Stax subsidiary Truth (which was posted a month or so back recorded by  Ben E. King), is "I Betcha Didn't Know That". KC & The Sunshine Band also covered it in 1979 as the flip side to "Please Don't Go" which was a #3 UK pop chart hit. There are a also few other versions.

When Stax folded in 1975 Knight set up his own label Juana writing for and producing The Controllers. The label hit pay dirt with a disco song "Ring My Bell" he wrote for Anita Ward which was a world-wide #1 hit in 1979. Not his finest song, which was originally written for a 12 year old Stacy Lattisaw but she chose to sign for Cotillion so the song was given to Anita Ward.

Another killer song written by Knight & Dees was "Drop My Heart Off At The Door" recorded by Barbara Hall on the flip to her Northern/Modern soul biggie "You Brought It On Yourself" in Jun 1975. It was produced by Chicago soul legends Major Lance and Otis Leavill. Ben E. King recorded it as an album track only ("Supernatural Thing") in US but it gained a UK single release as the flip to "Happiness Is Where You Find It" in 1975. I'm not sure which was first but would guess Ben E. King.
