Saint Smith [2023] - Yours, Saintly [Self Released]

An album we passed on when released a couple of weeks ago is "Yours, Saintly" from Saint Smith (Jared Abraham Shanklin) which we've now revisited.

Having only skimmed it initially, it seemed to be predominantly R&B, which it is, but there are a few more soulful tracks like "Round And Round", "Not Just Now And Then" (when you get past the long intro!), "Hold My Hand" and the title track "Yours, Saintly" which is our pick of the pack.

The Atlanta-based artist is from a religious background and blends R&B and gospel songs which he wrote, arranged and recorded in his home studio. The opening track "Take Care Of Me" and title track have already been released as singles.

The album is also available on CD via Bandcamp

One Girl Too Late - Version Excursion

The Brenda & The Tabulations Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions prompted us to dig out the versions we could find for their Van McCoy written song "One Girl Too Late".

We only found four versions, the 1973 Brenda & the Tabulations original, a 1975 album track only by the UK's Polly Brown, Pure Silk feat. Winsome 12" (mentioned the other day on the Wendy Walker post) and finally Gina Foster's Dutch only 7" promo (from a "Massive 5" CD compilation) both from around 1992 and both reggae tinged versions.

If you know of any others then let is know.

Brenda & The Tabulations [2023] - Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions [Simphouse Productions] (Full Album)

Here we go again with yet another Philadelphia Re-edit Session from Paul Simpson. His subject this time out consists of four tracks by Brenda & The Tabulations from their 1977 album "I Keep Coming Back For More".

The album was recorded at Sigma Sound Studio and produced by a combination of John Davis, Norman Harris, Bobby Eli along with Gilda C. Woods who originally signed the group to her Dionn set up. In fact it was after seeing the group appear at the Uptown Theatre (Philly's version of The Apollo where her DJ husband hosted the shows) that she decided to set up the Dionn label in 1966 to showcase their talent.

The group was formed in 1966 with a line-up of Brenda Payton, Eddie Jackson, Jerry Jones and Maurice Coates and stayed at Dionn and subsidiary label Top and Bottom until being singed to Epic when the line up changed with the three male backing singers departing and replaced by Pat Mercer and Deborah Martin.

Their last few singles for Top And Bottom involved Van McCoy who they continued to work with when they singed to Epic in 1972 with limited success. Only one of their four singles for the label between 1972-75 charted, that being "One Girl Too Late" which was popular in the UK although didn't chart but made it to #46 US R&B.

In 1977 they signed to Chocolate City but in reality it was Brenda with no Tabulations as she was essentially solo by this time. A third album was released "I Keep Coming Back For More" which produced two minor R&B hits "Home To Myself" (#61) and "(I'm A) superstar" (#31).

Brenda died in from breast cancer 1992 aged 46.

Track Listing:

01 - Let's go all the way (Down)... Paul Simpson Climax2 8:16
02 - I keep coming back for more (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:15
03 - Everybody's fool (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 9:07
04 - I'm a superstar (Paul Simpson Re-edit) 5:25

Full tracks are available to listen to on Paul's dedicated website available for a two weeks only.

Robert Tanner [2023] - Sweet Memories [Numero Group #NUM4414]

The song "Sweet Memories" was originally recorded by The New Sound on their solitary album "The New Sounds" on Turbo in 1970. Robert Tanner was one of three lead singers with the group and recorded a solo version the same year on Megatone which has become a trophy record in rare soul circles selling for up to £3.5k.

Both versions were reissued on 45 by Outta Sight in 2012 with both sides extracted from their 2011 CD only compilation "Willie & West Meet The New Sounds".

Numero Group has reissued it digitally today, so if you're not hung up on having it on vinyl and want save a few grand then snap it up or buy the CD or 45 reissue from Outta Sight, if still available otherwise it's the resale market.

The New Sound album is also in-demand and Hit And Run reissued three tracks from it last Aug.

J Treece & The Terri Green Project [2023] - Close The Door [Euro Musik] PROMO

The Terri Green Project should need little introduction as they have featured here many times but to recap they are Hamburg based songwriting and producer duo Terri Bjerre (aka Terri Green) and Torsten Abrolat (aka Todd Reed) who have scored four US Indie Soul and UK Soul chart #1 singles since 2019.

Joel Treece was born in Asheville, SC, but drew up in Baltimore, MD. He is a former US soldier who was stationed in Germany and made his way in the local music scene as a DJ and producer. Upon leaving the Army he became a member of Mirror Mirror who released a single in the early noughties.

He later moved into music production and formed his own company Treetop Entertainment and released around nine singles and a solo album "With Love" in Sep 2019 and is working on the follow up.

Joel met Terri Green via a mutual friend and came up with the idea of reinterpreting rather than covering Teddy P's classic Gamble & Huff song "Close The Door". It will be available on digital platforms on Friday (9 Jun '23).
