Kcortez [2021] - Fear\>=Love [YESnoE Music]

A new (debut?) album from Kcortez with a title that will be a nightmare for searches 'Fear\>=Love' ... presumably meaning 'fear is not greater or equal to love'?  It was released 10 Apr 2021. The only other thing I can find is a single 'Get On Up' from last year which is included on the album.

I think my pick of the tracks is 'Circles', although there a couple of others I'm warming to. It's one of those albums than you need to listen to a few times methinks.

I suspect he's a new artist, so needless to say I can't find any info on him apart from his facebook page.

Ane' [2021] - Where I'm Coming From [Self Released]

This keeps cropping up on the new releases from a singer called Ane'. I've listened to it a few times and have been hesitant to post it as it's 'almost but not quite' as some of the vocals sound off-key to my well-tuned ear 😉 but I'll let you draw your own conclusions.  It's basically an album full of covers of mainly 60s/70s songs.

Tracklist:
Somewhere In My Lifetime - Phyllis Hyman (1978)
The Makings Of You - Gladys Knight & The Pips (1974)
The Way - Jill Scott (2000)
Hypnotized - Linda Jones (1967)
Hello Stranger - Barbara Lewis (1963)
Street Life - Crusaders Feat. Randy Crawford (1979)
Together - The Intruders (1967)
Going Out of My Head - Little Anthony & The Imperials (1964)
This Is A Man's World - James Brown (1966)
The Ghetto - Donny Hathaway (1969)
You Send Me (Live) - Sam Cooke (1957)

I can find no information about the artist or discover anything else she has released.

June Evans [2021] - If You Want My Lovin' (Sunshine Mix) / Hardly Need To Say [Izipho Soul #ZP64]

Izipho Soul are reissuing two rare sides from June Evans on vinyl due 30 Apr 2021 (available for pre-order).

'Hardly Need To Say' was originally released in 1981 on H&H #HH0010 as a B side and has been reissued twice, on a 2016 compilation 'Jeremy Underground Beauty: A Journey Through Jeremy Underground's Collection' on Spacetalk #STLKLP001 and more recently in 2018 on a self-titled album by June Evans on Tambourine Party #TP001. (P.S. If you're happy with a digital version then it's still available for download on BandCamp).

'If You Want My Loving' was also issued on H&H #0058 on 12" in 1983 and appears on the June Evans 2018 album (and has a few 'unofficial' releases). The new verson is a remix, so has never been previously available.

A quick check on Popsike and 'Hardly Need To Say' currently sells for around £230 mark and 'If You Want My Loving' for around £150.

The Positive Sounds [1971] - I Almost Blew My Mind / You're The One I Need [Numero Group/Shiptown #203,229 203,230]

Numero Group has digitally reissued two rare sweet soul sides by The Positive Sounds on 6 Apr 2021, originally released on Shiptown in 1971 that sells for around £250 on original vinyl.

Shiptown (and sister label How Big) was a recording studio and label based in Norfolk, Virginia owned by Noah Biggs based in his Nimrod record store. The main artist on the label was Barbara Stant (nee Holmes) who was also a member of The Idets, and appeared on about half of the 16 or so releases. The Soul Duo (Ida Sands and Joe Webster) accounted for another three of the releases.

The Positive Sounds were formed in 1962 from a high school jazz band, initially called The Sounds whose members were James Carver, (alto saxophone), George Miller (trombone), Hugh Williamson (Tenor saxophone), Eric Turner (bass guitar), and Charles Amos Hunter, (drums).

In 1967 the group grew to nine members with the additon of Sidney Buffalow (trumpet), Michael Harris (guitar), Michael Robinson (guitar), and Alex Boyd (lead vocals).

Their first recording (around 1971) on Shiptown was 'I Almost Blew My Mind' / 'You're The One I Need' which included Wilson Williams, who released a couple of singles on sister label How Big, on vocals (I did a full discography on him last December). Both sides were written by group member Charles Hunter. Shortly afterwards, in 1972, they would become the house band at Harlem's Apollo theatre managed by Ruth Brown who was Michael Robinson's aunt (and also the aunt of rapper Rakim (aka William Michael Griffin of Eric B & Rakim fame).

They also released another two funky singles, 'The Creeper' / 'The Whole World Is Out To Lunch' on Chelsea in 1973 and 'I'm Fired Up (I Can't Get Enough)' in 1975 on Mighty Mo, both of which, interestingly, were published by Ken Williams' A-DISH-A-TUNES and produced by J.R. Bailey, Ken Williams, Mel Kent & Jerome Gasper (a smaller world than we think) who I featured a few days ago.

Kelly Price [2021] - I Want To Thank You [Motown Gospel]

The latest five track EP from Kelly Price 'Grace', her first release (apart from a few unsuccessful singles) since 2014, was released 1 Apr 2021. I've previously posted the disco/gospel track 'Dance Party'. The only other track of interest is a cover of One Way's Alicia Myers 'I Want To Thank You', The other tracks include an interlude, a rap and the other two are bland MOR ballads to my ears.

'I Want To Thank You' was written by Al Hudson & The Soul Partners / One Way member Kevin McCord and Al Perkins who produced the band, but also released many solo recordings from early 60s to late 70s.

I hadn't realised how much in demand the Alicia Myers version was with prices currently as high as £80 on Discogs for the original 7"!

Jacob G. [2021] - I Want You Back / I Guess That Don't Make Me A Loser [Industry Music Group]

Two tracks released simultaneously on 9 Apr 2021 by Jacob G who is the son on Little Willie G. (Garcia). Both are covers, 'I Want You Back' was written by Don Julian and recorded by Don Julian & The Larks in 1964. Trish Toledo did a version in 2018 which I posted here. The other, 'I Guess That Don't Make Me A Loser', is a Bridges, Knight & Eaton composition recorded by themselves as Brothers Of Soul in 1968 on Boo and also by Ruby Andrews on Zodiac in 1969.

I am guessing that these may see a 45 releases as with Ron Preyer released in Jan 2021?  Keep an eye on IMG's BandCamp page.
