Jarrod Lawson [2023-03-08] - Live @The Maltings

Jarrod Lawson kicked off his ten date UK 'one man' tour last night at The Maltings in Ely, Cambridgeshire. He humbly introduced himself admitting that he was extremely nervous and vulnerable which only served to endear him to the audience.
His first song was a new song written for his new wife Evalee Gertz who he married on 25 June 2022 at Cave Creek Farm, Trout Lake, WA, where they first met in the summer of 2018. He also recorded the track "Evalee" on "Be The Change" which he sang later in the first set which consisted of mainly new songs and ended with a tribute to one of his influences Chick Corea.

He opened the second set with new a song titled "Presently" which he wrote when his first marriage was ending  prior to releasing his highly acclaimed eponymous debut album in 2014. Jarrod told us that it was the first time that he had ever performed the song as he was not able to perform it before as it was too raw emotionally to get through to the end.  It was a very touching song.

The next song was his forthcoming single due next Friday (17 Mar) which is his interpretation of Prince's "I Would I Die 4 U" followed by the track "Niburu" from his predominantly instrumental album "Visions" released exclusively on vinyl by Izipho Soul in 2020 under the alias Orpheus.

One of the highlights, for me, of the evening was Jarrod playing along with a percussion demo by Sammy Figueroa for the title track of his sophomore album "Be The Change". Three new songs followed and he encored with, probably my favourite track from "Be The Change", "Love Isn't Always Enough" so I left a very happy chappy.  The audience had prompted him for "Footsteps In The Dark" which he said he couldn't really do justice to without backing support.

We must take time out to thank Simon Manni for persuading/encouraging/supporting Jarrod to take this bold step of performing 'naked' and organising the ten date tour. The next four dates are in London this weekend (two shows per day) at Pizza Express Jazz Club, Soho, which are all sold out, followed by Nottingham, Luton, Leek, Manchester and Margate between now and 25th March.

All dates listed below with tickets available from the venues. Get them now before they are also sold out.

Samuel Archer takes another track from his "Soul Music Vineyard" album to release as his current single. It's a collaboration with vocalist Lasro The King "Like I Love You" which was one of our choice cuts when we first reviewed the album back in Nov 2021 before its wider release in April 2022.

Antonio McLendon [2023] - My Little Girl [Self Released]

The new single from Antonio McLendon is "My Little Girl" and will be available on digital platforms on 19 March 2023. It is dedicated to his own little girl, double 2023 Grammy Award winning Samara Joy who won Best New Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album (for "Linger Awhile") at this year's Grammy award ceremony in Feb '23.

It's another classy outing from the Philadelphia native, NYC resident, who has enjoyed recent success as a featured artist on Output/Input's single "I'm In Love" and his solo release "How I Feel", both in 2022.

He has also lent his voice on two more very recent singles: the gospel song "Gonna Be Alright" with Andre Ski Taylor (23 Feb) (which as this goes to press, is sitting at #3 on Amazon UK Hot New Releases) and on B & The Family's "Forever" (28 Feb) (his voice on this one is distinctly reminiscent of the great Luther Vandross).

Not only that, Antonio is featured on a forthcoming Output/Input album from which the lead single will be "Smiling Faces" featuring Antonio on vocals which you can hear a clip of on Output/Input's facebook page. He's certainly a very in-demand vocalist and quite rightly so!

Antonio has graciously provided us with the official music video to share with you.

Young Gun Silver Fox [2023] - Moonshine [Mixto Records]

Young Gun Silver Fox are a UK music duo consisting of Shawn Lee and Andy Platts. The name is derived from Lee's silver locks and Platt's membership of group Mamas Gun.

Lee is originally from Wichita, KS, who moved to London in 1995 and has released many solo and collaborative albums numbering around thirty.

Platts was born in Hong Kong moving to the UK aged 10. He played guitar on Corrine Bailey Rae's debut self-titled album in 2005 shortly before forming Mamas Gun in 2007 (with Terry Lewis (guitar), Dave Oliver (keys), Chris Boot (drums) and Cameron Dawson (bass)) and releasing their debut album "Routes To Riches" in 2009. He has collaborated with luminaries such as Rod Temperton, John Oates and Brian Jackson.

Together as Young Gun Silver Fox they have released four albums, beginning with "West End Coast" in 2015, and more than twenty singles. Their music is inspired by the 70s/80s US west coast sound dubbed Yacht Rock/Yacht Soul.

The latest single "Moonshine" is released digitally today. The song must have been in the can for a while as I notice Rod Temperton's name on writing credits who died in 2016. It has already seen pre-release on 7" vinyl by Légère Recordings which includes "Tip Of The Flame" from their last album "Ticket To Shangri-La" on the flip, and may only be available from live shows.
