The next Global:Soul Showcase is scheduled for Sunday 12th March 2023 at London's Jazz Cafe in Camden Town. It will feature six up and coming artists: Jaz Karis, Bel Cobain, Kyra, Maxine Scott and B-ahwe with another to be announced in the new year.

We are told that half the tickets have already sold with the Early Bird Two For One and Super Early bird tickets already gone but Early Bird £10, Advance £15 and Full Price £20 tickets are available via Eventbrite.

Jaz Karis

Brit School alumni is one of the hottest emerging Singer Songwriters has enjoyed much success in her own right and popular collabs with Blue Lab Beats, Reuben James, Juls, J Warner, Big Tobz & Katy B. Best known for her track ‘Petty Lovers’ featured on COLORS achieving more than 10M views.

Her recent single ‘Side Of You’ reached number 1 on the Global Soul Chart lifted from her new EP ‘Dear Jaz’ which will no doubt cement her as one of the UKs finest.

More Jaz Karis

Bel Cobain

Surrounded by an air of mystique East London songstress Bel Cobain who comes from a unique community of musicians who have come together in support of each other to create a whole new movement.

She first came to the fore in 2019 when her breakout song ‘Introverted Stoner’ put her on the map followed by her collaboration with Lex Amor the following year which cemented her place within the scene.

Her recent single 'Leader' produced by Santiago Morales fuses Latin and Afrobeat in her Soulful Jazz sound and expresses the unspoken power of submission through a fresh lens of empowerment and sexual liberation, shining a light on the freedom of surrendering and allowing yourself to be led.

Bel cuts through the noise with her radical thinking avoiding unnecessary frills to focus her music style, rooted in poetry, on challenging societal and political narratives. A unique soul and vessel to share stories we can all connect with, she aspires for her music to be a gift and an act of love for all to share and enjoy especially in her immersive Live performances which are something to behold.

Kyra

British singer-songwriter Kyra, has quickly established herself as a key player in the UK music scene. Her unorthodox and gripping releases from debut EP project 'Xanadu', caught the attention of BBC Radio 1's Nick Grimshaw, featuring in his 'track of the week' series, Jamz Supernova's BBC1Xtra Top 5 EPs and Jess Izsatt (BBC Introducing).

Throughout the year, Kyra has lent her perfected soulful vocal to a number of more jazz infused singles; 'after the love', 'blossom spring' (recently playlisted on Jazz FM) and the latest 'excellent', a self care song created in ode to her beloved sister circle.

2023 looks to be an exciting year of continued success for Kyra, with the release of her second EP 'as things grow', amplified with an array of live shows across the UK and also internationally.

More B-ahwe

Maxine Scott

One of the rising stars in Nu Jazz & Neo Soul discovered by Ashley Beadle’s Ramrock Records she has already enjoyed BBC Radio 1 and Global Soul support. Maxine Scott is a fresh voice on the scene and her talents were quickly picked up by ADR, providing the vocals on their ‘Back to Dance’ release, which notched up four weeks play on Danny Howard’s BBCR 1’s ‘Dance Party’ show and reached No.1 on Beatport’s Dance charts. Maxine’s debut release on Ramrock Blue, 'Erykah U Bad', scored a 10/10 review in Blues and Soul, along with support from Mixmag and DMC, among others, 922 radio plays globally in 3 months, featuring on over 200 radio stations worldwide, including Mi-Soul's 'Traffic Jam of the Week'.  Releases in 2022 for Maxine include ‘Ya Energy’ with new producer Alf.E, along with the follow up, ‘Love Points, on Ramrock Blue and she’ll also be featuring on a solo track as part of the legendary Black Science Orchestra’s 30th Anniversary project!

Kim Weston - A Profile 20th

Today is Kim Weston's birthday, she will be 83. Her given name is Agatha Nathalia Weston born in Detroit on 20 Dec 1939. She was signed by Motown in 1961 and was a member of The Wright Specials who released two of only four singles on the gospel imprint Divinity in 1962 and 1963, however, she states that, whilst she was a member of the group, she didn't record with them. Her first solo single came in Feb 1963 which was the original version of a Norman Whitfield and Mickey Stevenson song that Yvonne Fair would had a hit with eleven years later in 1974, "It Should Have Been Me".

Here is her full discography of albums and singles along with a hand picked playlist of forty of her best tunes, several unreleased until years later.

Her biggest hit was a Holland Dozier Holland song "Take Me in Your Arms (Rock Me a Little While)" recorded, but not released, first by Brian Holland in 1964. It was #4 R&B and #50 Hot 100 in 1965. Many others have recorded it since with the best version by The Isley Brothers in 1968. Apart from a duet with Marvin Gaye on "It Takes Two" (which also reached #4 R&B and #14 Hot 100) in 1967, her only other top 20 R&B hit was a cover of a Four Tops 1965 album track "Helpless" in 1966 (#13 R&B #56 Hot 100). She had a further five records in the R&B chart up to 1970.

She recorded a solo album whilst at Motown "Take Me In Your Arms" but it was never released so her only Motown album is a duets album "Take Two" with Marvin Gaye in 1966.

There's an album on Spotify called "Take Me In Your Arms" (which has what looks to me like a photo of a young Aretha Franklin on the cover!). Whether this is the unreleased Motown album or not I don't know but I somehow doubt it as a/ there are too many tracks (18) and b/ because of the wrong photo being used which indicates it's 'possibly' not a legitimate release.

She left Motown acrimoniously in a dispute over royalties along with her husband Mickey Stevenson in 1966 (and later sued them) and joined MGM where she released two albums and six singles between 1966-69. A handful of singles were then released on three different labels (Pride, Banyan Tree (duet with Johnny Nash) and People) until she joined Stax in 1971 and released three singles on Mikim (presumably a contraction of the couple's name Mickey Stevenson and Kim Weston) subsidiary of Volt and one on Enterprise between 1971-74. One more record appeared on, what would appear to be her own label, Rahkim in 1975 which featured Ronnie McNeir.

In the 80s/90s she teamed up with Ian Levine who had met her in 1969 and she was the first artist he recorded on his Motorcity label. She released an album and around five singles. Another album, "Talking Loud", was recorded in 1992 but not released but some of the tracks would later appear on a compilation "The Best Of Kim Weston" in 1995.

There have been several compilations with the best being "Greatest Hits & Rare Classics" (1991), "The Story Of...Hits And Rarities" (1995), "The Motown Anthology" (2005).
