The Whispers [2021] - It’s Been Too Long [Self Released]

The new single from the legendary Whispers is a song originally recorded by Al Johnson on his album "Him Or Me" which was released on CD and digitally in 2014.

"It’s Been Too Long" is only currently available from The Whispers official website but receives a wider release tomorrow (15 Oct 2021).

The Whispers were formed in 1963 in Watts, CA. The mainstays of the group are identical twins Wallace 'Scotty' and Walter Scott who are currently joined by Leaveil Degree who has been with them since 1973 and was formerly with The Friends Of Distinction (who were mentioned only a few days ago on the Derek Damien post as he is the son of Harry Elston another member of the group).

They had their most commercially successful spell in the early 80s with hits such as "And The Beat Goes On", "Lady" and "It's A Love Thing" but personally I love their earlier stuff especially from the mid 70s.

I believe that this was recorded during lockdown and their voices still sound great, Scotty & Walter are now 78, with Leavill being a 'spring chicken' at 73!

They were inducted into The Official R&B Hall of Fame in 2014.

Diggin' Dirt [2021] - Zodiac [Self Released]

Diggin' Dirt are a seven piece band formed on Arcata, CA in 2011 as a quintet. They released their debut album "Full Season" in 2016 and another "Funkacillus Groovidophilus" in 2019.

Their latest single "Zodiac" was released yesterday (13 Oct 2021). I've also posted a video for a single from last year "Satisfaction" as good funk often gets neglected here!

Echo Palms [2021] - Expand [Self Released]

London Buses! ...I rarely post instrumentals and then two come at once! This one is from a group named Echo Palms, a project by guitarist Gabriel Forsman, which he describes "combines layed back beats with souly jazz guitar vibes". I can't argue with that apart from the spelling of laid .. 'write it out 100 times boy!'🤣 ... however, he is forgiven as I've just discovered he's from Malmo in Sweden (you wanna see my Swedish! .. non-existent!), for some reason I thought he was from L.A. initially!

His latest release (his third to date under this moniker, all this year) is "Expand" which was set loose to the world yesterday (13 Oct 2021).

Poppy Sound [2021] - The Wait [Funky Sensation Records]

I've come across several tracks recently by this outfit going under the name Poppy Sound which I assume is just a name used by a set of producers. It's their eleventh release so far this year using this moniker. I'm pretty sure they must be related to The MILF, Funk Yourself and Block Street Sound tracks posted recently. These guys seem to be quite prolific at present, whoever they are, as very little information is given, even in the writing credits they are always just credited to the group name?

This is one of the better ones titled "The Wait" released today (14 Oct 2021). It's got a real Philly / MFSB / Salsoul feel about it with strong hints of Latin. I'm not sure whether it's a cover of something using a different title but I'm certainly not familiar with it (although it sounds familiar if that makes sense), anyone know anything different then please leave a comment.

I really like this, I'm not normally one for instrumentals but this is a vibe!

As alluded on the earlier Ronnie Williams post, Bernadette Cooper, the founder of 80s all girl funk group Klymaxx, has a new single released yesterday (13 Oct 2021). "Features" features Lorena Lungs.

Cooper featured here in June with her last single "May The Best Girl Win".

Isa Reyes [2021] - Bels [Self Released] (Full EP)

Isa Reyes is from New York and delivered her fourth release today, her first EP "Bels", consisting of four tracks which includes two of her three singles "Whistles" (Oct 202) and "Santiago" (Sep 2021) (video below). She debuted in Apr 2018 with "Sweet Tooth".

It's a wispy neo soul job with "Black Velvet' probably being my choice cut, but "Bels" is quite nice too after a few listens.
