BDQ Feat. Lydia Sharpe [2023] - Bad Girl / Could This Be Love [BDQ]

BDQ is Bunn Debrett Quintet, a UK jazz quintet headed by percussionist & drummer, Stephen Bunn (Bunny), and guitarist and piano player Jon DeBrett (formerly of 90s Acid Jazz band Mother Earth) along with Alan Barnes, Neil Corcoran, Roger Beaujolais.

This single features the vocals of Lydia Sharpe who met the group by chance in conversation in a Soho, London, tailor's shop whilst one was being measured for a pair of trousers. She told them that she was a singer and after singing a few lines she was invited into the studio and these two songs, "Bad Girl" and "Could This Be Love", with others to come, is the result.

The single was available on vinyl via Bandcamp, released 10 Feb, but has now sold out but you may find one from a record dealer.

Both songs are covers, "You've Been a Bad Girl" was recorded by Billy Hawks in 1968 on "Heavy Soul!" (the same album that contained "O' Baby (I Believe I'm Losing You)") and "Could This Be Love" by Rosco (Gordon) & Barbara (Kerr) on Old Town 1964.

Norman Hutchins [2023] - I Really Love You / God's Got A Blessing [Izipho Soul #ZP083]

Izipho Soul has two new vinyl single releases available to pre-order which will be released on 1 Mar '23. The first is a pair of tracks by Bishop Norman Hutchins taken from two albums.

The A side is an extended mix of  "I Really Love You" from "Where I Long To Be" (JDI Records 2006) paired with "God's Got A Blessing" from "Nobody But You" (JDI 2002) (which is incorrectly titled "Norman Hutchins" on Discogs)

Norman Earl Hutchins was born in Delaware in 1962 and started his solo music career in 1992 with the release of an eponymous album. He proceeded to release at least another eleven albums over his career with his last album released in 2013.

He started preaching at the age of 8 becoming ordained at 12 and later, aged only 19, the preacher of Hope Church of God in Christ in Delaware. When he relocated to L.A. he became music minister for COGIC before returning to Delaware to start Frontline Ministries.

His first two albums ("Norman Hutchins" (1992) and "Don't Stop Prayin'" (1993) failed to chart. After six years his next album "Nobody But You" appeared on L.A. based JDI where he would release five albums, the first three charted ("Nobody But You" and "Battlefield" in 1999 and "Emmanuel" in 2001) but the last "Battlefield: The Sermon" (2002) and "Where I Long To Be" (2006) didn't.

In 2008 he signed with IR Records for the releases of "Spontaneous Praise, Vol. 1" (2008), "God Is Faithful" (2009), "If You Didn't Know...Now You Know" (2011) and his last album "Hosanna" (2013). All charted on the Gospel Albums chart.

Hutchins has received eight Dove Award nominations and eight Stellar Award nominations, along with Grammy Awards nominations.

The Howard Lemon Singers [2023] - You Are Somebody / For The Children [Miles Away #MA011]

For the forthcoming 7" vinyl release on Miles Away they have selected a pair of tracks from a rare gospel album "Seasons" by The Howard Lemon Singers which was released on TK gospel imprint Gospel Roots in 1977. The tracks are "You Are Somebody" and "For The Children".

The single won't be released until 24 Mar '23 but will, more than likely, sell out on pre-order so, if you want one then, pre-ordering via Bandcamp would be recommended.

Only a sound sample is currently available for "For The Children" but fortunately "You Are Somebody" is available on YouTube to give you an idea. There are contradictory comments though regarding the female lead vocalist. Miles Ahead gives it as Esther Smith on both whilst the YouTube comment states that it's Joyce Moore. I think they sound different on both so perhaps it's Moore on the A side and Smith on the B. The musicians include several from Memphis who were at Stax such as Lester Snell (piano) and Willie Hall (drums) (both members of The Isaac Hayes Movement whilst Hall was also a member of The Bar-Kays), Randy Brown's brother William Brown (organ) and, interestingly, Brainstorm's fretless bassist E. Lamont Johnson.

The group recorded four albums between 1966 and 1977 and their first three are available on Spotify, but of course it would be this one, "Seasons" that isn't!

The Teskey Brothers [2023] - The Winding Way [Decca Records]

Staying with the raw, bluesy and rootsy soul theme. The Teskey Brothers have released what appears to be a double single "The Winding Way" but is actually an EP/album building as the two songs are "Oceans Of Emotions" and "This Will Be Our Year" which was released as a single in Nov '22. The full album is slated for release on 16 Jun '23.

The Teskey Brothers are a blue-eyed blues/rock band from Melbourne formed in 2008 by Josh & Sam Teskey.  To date they have released two studio albums and two live albums.

They featured here with "Never Tear Us Apart" in Apr '21 which was a #24 UK pop hit in 1986 for INXS but they put a soulful twist on it which may surprise you as it has a real Stax/southern soul flavour sounding like it is right out of Muscle Shoals. It is nothing like the INXS version.

Josh Teskey recently did a nice duet with WILSN on her "These Days Are Over" album on a cover of "Hurts So Bad"
