London born, Essex raised of Cameroonian and Jamaican heritage, 23 year
old singer/songwriter, Konyikeh McLaren, released her debut EP "Litany" yesterday which features both of her previous singles (her debut "Sorrow" (Apr '23) and "Teenage Dreams" (Jun '23)) and amongst the five tracks.
Konyikeh began playing the violin aged seven and became a music scholar
at a prestigious school in West London and on Saturdays would attend the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she played violin, piano and
perform in the orchestra and chamber choir, alongside learning music
theory.
Throughout the EP, produced by Charlie J Perry, there's a sense of
plaintiveness and liturgy while she ruminates on her sorrows track by
track. She says "It's kind of a little prayer to soothe yourself and the things that I
wrote in my teenage years that held me together. These are songs from
the darkest time in my life. They're like little prayers to myself".
Her sound is reminiscent of Joan Armatrading come Tracy Chapman, folk
soul if you will.
