R.I.P. Inez Foxx (9 Sep 1937 - 25 Aug 2022)

News is belated being reported that Inez Foxx has died on 25 Aug 2022 aged 84. She was born in Greensboro, NC, on 9 Sep 1937 and was half of a duo with her brother Charlie known as Inez & Charlie Foxx. She will be best remembered for her 1963 Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit "Mockingbird".
The birth dates are according to North Carolina birth index, however other sources are quoting 1942 making her 79. Given that by 1960 she was already married and recorded under her married name Johnston, I think 1937 is more accurate as otherwise she would have been only 17/18 in 1960, which of course is possible but improbable.

Inez later married songwriter/producer Luther Dixon who wrote "I Love You 1000 Times" together which was a #6 R&B (#31 Hot 100) hit for The Platters in 1966. They later divorced.

She started recording in 1960 using her married name Inez Johnston, releasing two singles on Brunswick "A Feeling (That I Can't Explain)" / "Big Bad Betsy" (1960) and "A Change Of Heart" / "Why Did Ya!?" (1961) before her biggest success "Mockingbird" in Jun 1963 on Symbol using her birth name Fox with an added 'x'. The song is their arrangement of a traditional lullaby "Hush Little Baby" which they auditioned to Juggy Murray who released it on his Sue subsidiary Symbol.

Symbol released another four singles under her sole name although Charlie was also present on the recordings. In Sep 1964 they began being billed as Inez & Charlie Foxx. On later reissues of "Mockingbird" it is billed as both but on the original 1964 release it was billed/credited only to Inez. The song was a bit of a novelty record and the pair never managed to follow it up.

By 1966 they moved to Musicor releasing "No Stranger To Love" / "Come By Here" on the parent imprint followed by several on their Dynamo subsidiary. The first on Dynamo was a big Northern Soul tune "Tightrope" (1967) played at The Twisted Wheel, Manchester, that did nothing on the US R&B chart. Another massive NS tune was "Never Love A Robin", which she wrote with her husband Luther Dixon along with Thom Bell, but versions were mainly played by Barbara (Gaskins) & her niece Brenda (Gaskins) or Tommy Hunt (both also released on Dynamo) but it was released on their 1967 album "Come By Here".

As the decade ended Inez left Musicor/Dynamo and recorded five singles for Stax subsidiary Volt from Sep 1972 to Mar 1974 where she also released an album "Inez Foxx at Memphis". Her brother worked as a songwriter/producer. He died in 1998 aged 64.

Alvin Frazier [2022] - River (Expanded Edition) [Self Released] (Full Album)

Alvin Frazier from Cleveand, OH released his third album "River" on 17 Sep 2021 (it was originally scheduled for 2019). It follows "A Wonderful Love : Love & Faith Vol 2" (2013) and "Love & Faith Vol 1" (2006).

Yesterday (6 Sep 2022) he released an expanded edition which includes four additional tracks, live and demo versions of "Lost In Love" plus two bonus tracks: "Not Around" and "Sleepin'".

It's 'proper' soul music. I think my personal choice cut (on first listen) would be "In The Meantime".

Not only is Alvin Frazier a singer/songwriter, he is also an established actor appearing in the Miles Davis biopic "Miles Ahead" (2015) amongst several other movie roles.

Kara Tenae [2022] - Faith Over Fear [KT's Music is Life] (Full EP)

A new single "Outside" was released by Kara Tanae on 1 Sep and is followed by a four track EP, "Faith Over Fear", with includes the last two singles "Outside" and "Undecided" (30 Jul). Her only other release is  a single "Mirror" in Feb 2018.

All tracks except the first are explicit, although there is a clean version of "Outside" available to download.

Kara is Shikara Tenae Stitt from Huntington Beach, CA, and the release of her debut EP on 6 Sep 2022 coincides with her birthday.

My choice cut is "Mirror" although it is explicit and contains a section of rap by Compton based MC Guerilla Black.

The Four Mints [1973] - Gently Down The Stream [Capsoul #CSLP 370] (Full Album)

A group played and mentioned in the latest DJ Kool Keith podcast was The Four Mints. I noticed that their sole album "Gently Down The Stream" was reissued in 1997 on CD and then several times afterwards on various labels, therefore, as it is available digitally and to stream it is well worth posting.

The Four Mints were a vocal quartet from Columbus, OH, who released around five singles and one album between 1969-1974 on Capsoul. The label released just twelve singles and this highly collectable album (original vinyl copies have sold on Discogs for between £100-£220.) and when you get your ears around it you will understand why. It contains a collection of superb vocal group sweet soul harmony songs.

The group hit the R&B charts with two singles in 1973 "Do You Really Love Me" reached the heady heights of #84 and was followed by "You're My Desire" which got to #80, both included on the album. So commercially successful they were not and disbanded in 1974 which also coincided with the label, run by WVKO DJ Bill Moss, also folding. Another excellent group bit the dust and hence their music is quite highly sought after, especially on the LA. Lowrider scene.

DJ Kool Keith [2022-09-06] - Soulful Slow Jams [Soul Radio Coast2Coast]

The Soul Emperor's Soulful Slow Jams show broadcast on L.A. station Soul Radio Coast 2 Coast Mon/Tue (5/6 Sep 2022).

He played the full version of The Ambassadors "I Really Love You", a song that has been sampled by several artists in the last year i.e. Morgan Munroe "Mutual", Akori "It's Hot In Here", Charlie Dhani "Stay Or Go", Lion Babe "Home" to name just a few The song was released in 1969 on Philly's Arctic label and was written by label owner Jimmy Bishop and one Kenny Gamble who you may just happen to know of!

The Four Mints were a male vocal quartet from Columbus, OH. They released their first single in 1969 on Holiday which was later released on Capsoul in 1973. Both labels were Columbus based and owned by local DJ Bill Moss. Holiday only released three singles and was then replaced by Capsoul which released around a dozen singles between 1970-74. Five of them were by The Four Mints who also released a full album "Gently Down The Stream" on the label in 1973 on which this song appeared as well as on a single. It's got that early 70s sweet soul sound which was contemporary at the time with the likes of The Stylistics, The Chi-Lites and The Dramatics and others all having success with it and is now popular on the East L.A. Lowrider scene.

The Triumphs "The World Owes Me A Lovin'" (this week's SoulStrutter Selection) is a superb deep soul tune tucked away on the flip side to their big Northern Soul tune "I'm Coming To Your Rescue" on Okeh from 1967. I believe that it was originally a promo only with stock/issue repressed copies appearing in the 70s to satisfy the demand for the Northern Soul scene. The lead singer, and writer of the song featured here, is Delilah Kennebruew aka Delilah Moore who released a few solo singles in the 70s on Money and Middle Earth which are popular for lovers of crossover soul.

DJ Kool Keith has two shows per week, his Soulful Vibes show Sun 12:00-14:00 (BST/UK Time) on Soul Groove Radio and his Soulful Slow Jams show on Soul Radio Coast 2 Coast 22:00 PDT (Tue 06:00 BST in UK).

Gloria Gaynor - A Profile

Gloria Gaynor is celebrating her 79th birthday today. She is probably best known for two or three songs. The first a disco version of "Never Can Say Goodbye" in 1974 (which perhaps introduced her to most), the female emancipation song "I Will Survive" which was a worldwide smash hit 1978 and is still played to this day as an anthem, and what has become a gay anthem "I Am What I Am" in 1983.
Born Gloria Fowles in Newark, NJ, on 7 Sep 1943 one of six children who had been singing for a decade or more before her breakthrough hit "Never Can Say Goodbye" in 1974.

She was a member of the Soul Satisfiers and recorded her first single "She'll Be Sorry" / "Let Me Go Baby" on Johnny Nash's Jocida label in Sep 1965. The A side, "She'll Be Sorry" is a song written by Lou Courtney and a young Dennis Lambert (Lambert & Potter) and  has had spins on the Northern Soul scene.

Her next recording wasn't until Aug 1973 when she released a single for Columbia "Honey Bee" written by the Steals twins (aka Mystic & Maestro) and arranged by Norman Harris. A shorter remixed version was then somehow released on MGM with a different B side in Jan 1974.

In Sep 1974 she released her disco version of a song written by Clifton Davis originally intended for The Supremes but recorded by The Jackson 5 as their first single from "Maybe Tomorrow" album in 1971. It was a #2 Hot 100 hit for them featuring a twelve year old Michael. Isaac Hayes was the first to cover the song on "Black Moses" and then as a single in 1971 reaching #22 Hot 100. Gaynor's version reached #9 Billboard Hot 100 and #2 UK in Jan 1975 and was the very first #1 on a newly created Billboard Disco chart. It is a popular song with SecondHandSongs currently listing 151 different versions of it. Some of the versions  were recorded by artists such as Jr. Walker & The All Stars, The New Birth, James Brown, Melba Moore, Donnie Elbert and Smokey Robinson who all recorded it before Gaynor, however there are not many notable versions since although Will Downing did one in 2019 on Romantique (part one).

Gloria's debut album "Never Can Say Goodbye" is historically significant as the A side consisted of a 19 minute continuous mix by Tom Moulton  of "Honey Bee", "Never Can Say Goodbye" and "Reach Out, I'll Be There" and was the first of it's kind and is considered as probably the first disco album.
She had a few more moderate hits until 1978 when her career was hitting the buffers and she was asked to sing a song intended originally as a B side to "Substitute" (a cover of a 1977 pop hit by South African girl group Clout) and on its first release was actually relegated to the B side until it was passed to New York club DJs and the rest is history as that song was "I Will Survive".

The above is all 'fine and dandy' you may by now be thinking but those are pop/disco songs, so what has this got top do with a soul music blog? If you pick though her albums there are several lesser known, non-hit songs that have graced modern soul dancefloors (i.e. "Tell Me How", "This Love Affair" and "Casanova Brown" in particular and some have finally woken up to "We Just Can't Make" which as been ignored for decades simply because it's easily found on the flip to "Never Can Say Goodbye") along with some good ballads.
