Candace Woodson [2022] - (Trying To Be) Perfect [Mo Better Records] (Official Video)

Candace Woodson released,"(Trying To Be) Perfect" on 25 Feb 2022 and yesterday (23 Apr 2022) posted a video for it.

The song of course was written and recorded originally by Valerie Simpson for her 2012 album "Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again" and Candace was given Valerie's blessing to record the song, saying "The Message is timely and you have the vocal power to get it over" and it surely does exhibit Candace's vocal prowess.

The song was produced by Nigel Lowis.

George Scott [2022] - I’m A Fool For You + Let The Past Be The Past / Why Is It Taking So Long [Hit And Run #HR 1539]

The second release from Hit And Run on 21 Apr 2022 consists of three tracks from George Scott's only album "Find Someone To Love" released on all Platinum subsidiary Maple in 1971 and reissued on CD in 2015 which was coincidentally posted in May 2020 HERE. Scott  was a member of The Blind Boys Of Alabama.

The first song "I'm A Fool For You" has a bit of a back story and I'd direct you to the post of the full album above for the full story but in essence it is the same backing used by The Manhattans on "It's Gonna Take A Lot To Bring Me Back" on Deluxe in 1967 and by The Icemen on Ole-9 the same year and an unknown (but thought to be Gloria Barnes) female vocal on a Jimi Hendrix 1974 album track on Trip.

On the same side is "Let The Past Be The Past" which has the same backing as Linda Jones "Give My Love A Try" (1967) originally recorded by co-writer Ray Lewis on Fairmount in 1966.

The B side "Why Is It Taking So Long" has more connections as it was recorded by Nate Adams on Atlantic in 1967  and also by Tony Baxter on Gate in 1973 which had a version of  "Let The Past Be The Past" on the flip. The song also appeared on a Herman Hitson compilation by Soul-Tay-Shus in 2005.

NOTE All alternate versions mentioned above were posted HERE when the album was posted so please follow this link to listen to avoid re-posting.

The Soul Meditations [2022] - Someone To Hold Me / The Bird [Hit And Run #HR 1538]

Garry Cape's Hit and Run label has announced the release of two new singles on 21 Apr 2022. The first is one of the rarest singles on Skipper Lee Frazier's Houston based Ovide label where Archie Bell & the Drells began their recording career backed by the Ovide house band The T.S.U. Toronadoes.

This recording by The Soul Meditations was sandwiched between Archie Bell & The Drells and T.S.U. Toronadoes first and second releases respectively on the label in 1967 and is their only recording.

The top side "Someone To Hold Me" is vocal group soul harmony much loved by the lowrider community.

The flip "The Bird" is a jerky Northern Soul style typical 60s dance craze tune and it wouldn't surprise me if the T.S.U. Toronades were playing on.

D'Sound Feat. Autumn Rowe [2022] - Right Now [daWorks Records]

Released on Friday but not posted straight away as it was included on D'Sound's album "25" released in Jan 2022 to celebrate their 25th anniversary of the release of their debut album "Spice Of Life" in 1997.

This single release includes the full album version and a shorter edit of "Right Now" which features New Yorker Autumn Rowe on lead vocals. It has an acid jazz feel about it.

D'Sound are from Oslo, Norway and were formed in 1993 by drummer Kim Ofstad and bassist Jonny Sjo when they met at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA.

Que Derry [2022] - What's The Difference [The MADE Series]

Que Derry (Quinn Derry) from Beaumont, TX, released his fourth album "All About Love" on Friday (22 Apr 2022) which contains fifteen tracks from which I've selected "What's The Difference" to post. Unusually, although he has released four albums, he only appears to have released one single.

Just'n [2022] - Good Ol Lovin [CRE Enterprises]

This one is a bit of a mystery as it is a promo that has been circulating since mid Feb by an artist named Just'n with a song called "Good Ol' Lovin'" which samples Teddy Pendergrass' "Love T.K.O".

If you Shazam it, it returns the correct title but the artist as Jay Hall, theoretically released in Dec 2021 which doesn't seem to exists which is a bit odd. I've searched high and low trying to see if it has been released without success and have resisted from posting it waiting for its release.

With a bit of sleuthing I've discovered that Just'n is in fact the nephew of Calvin Richardson and he is appearing in a show with him and Stacii Adams at Holiday Inn, in Texarkana, AR, on 23 Jul 2022. I've contacted Calvin who runs CRE Enterprises to try and ascertain when the track will be released.

Here is what it says about Just'n on the booking page:
"The fruit doesn't fall far from the tree" family adage is true as it relates to Calvin Richardson's nephew, soulful singer/songwriter JUST'N. His dynamic delivery and silky tenor compliments his artist vision and sonic production. With electric performances and great fashion sense, JUST'N is musically gifted and sharing his talents with music lovers."

A sample of it was originally posted by Calvin Richardson on his Instagram account on 11 Feb 2022.

Thanks to Leigh 'The Flava' Taylor for providing mp3 to post which is currently his #1 Gourmet Speci6l on his weekly radio show.

Cozy MoBetta Feat. Terrell Angelo [2022] - Do You Feel Me? [Self Released]

Cozy MoBetta (Moses Aaron Fields) from Philadelphia has been performing since he was 8 years old. With his group Split Image he won a talent show at the Apollo theatre in Harlem but soon recognised that he was destined to be a solo artist.

Since 2020 he's released a couple of singles and an EP and has a new single "Do You Feel Me" featuring Terrell Angelo due for release on Friday (29 Apr 2022).

The song to me sounds a little dated i.e. a noughties feel, whether that's intentional or the song's been in the can since then I don't know.
