T-Groove & George Kano Experience [2022] - Lady Champagne [P-Vine]

Released yesterday (13 Apr 2022) is a single from Japanese producer Yuki "T-Groove" Takahashi in collaboration with Japanese drummer George Kane titled "Lady Champagne" which for some reason reminds me of the sort of material Crown Heights Affair  where recording in the mid 70s.

I'm not sure whether there's an extended mix in the pipeline but it feels a bit short at 3:34 which is an indication of how good it is.

Tomi Jenkins [2022] - Like We Used To [Self Released]

Tomi Jenkins may not be a name that immediately trips off the tongue but he is a founding member of Cameo who were originally known as New York City Players when formed in 1974 and then The Players until the name was contested by the Ohio Players whereby their name was changed to Cameo. Larry Blackmon and several other members were in a group called East Coast formed in 1973 which included Gwen Guthrie prior to forming New York City Players.

He released his debut solo album "Tomi" in 1989 and another in 2005 "The Way" followed by "A Life To Remember" in 2017 and has released a new single "Like We Used To" on 28 Mar 2022 which is from a forthcoming album "Soul Survivor".

Oyobi Feat. Karen Lee Andrews [2022] - Make Me Believe In You [Defected Records]

This was a real surprise. I missed it first time around when released on 18 Mar 2022 but stumbled upon it today. It's a new version of a Curtis Mayfield penned song "Make Me Believe In You" originally released by Patti Jo on Wand in 1973 which was featured on Ian Levine's Disco Demand's Solid Soul Sensations compilation on Pye in 1975.

The new version is by Oyobi featuring Karen Lee Andrews from Australia formerly known as Ms Murphy who was a finalist in The Voice in 2013.

Aside from Curtis Mayfield's 1974 version on "Sweet Excorcist" there's also another version I'd overlooked and was reminded by Yves (aka USMAN47) by Melba Moore on her 1976 album "This Is It" which is more of a disco cut. An even longer, alternate, 9 mins plus version also appeared on her "Dancin' With Melba" album in 1979.

The Patti Jo version below is a later 12 " version released in 1999.

Oyobi also did a cover of Jean Carn's 1978 Philly classic "Don't Let It Go To Your Head" in 2020 (on 7" only) which also features Karen Lee Andrews.

Nicole Cassandra Smit [2022] - Sundown [Liljekonvalj Records]

Nicole Cassandra Smit is an Edinburgh based singer/songwriter born and raised to Indo/Swedish/Dutch parents in Jakarta, Indonesia.

She released her debut solo single "Strong Woman" last year which was featured repeatedly on The Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show on 6Music. Her sophomore single "Sundown" (co-written with Joseph Malik and Chris Greive) was released on 12 Apr 2022 and is the lead track from her forthcoming album. It's a jazzy/bluesy neo soul song.

However, she is no newcomer as she started out in 2014 as a backing singer for an Edinburgh Fringe Show "Blues!" and in 2016 starred in her own show "Queen Of The Blues" and performed all year round as Nicole & The Back Up Crew. She also formed a lo-fi alternative trio called Smitten with Charlie Wild and Alex Palmer who have releases two EP and a live album.

She also featured on Joseph Malik's "Looking Right Back At You" on his "Diverse Pt.3" album last year.
