VA [2022] - Eccentric Soul: The Shiptown Label [Numero Group]

Those guys at Numero Group provide a great service to lovers of vintage soul music by reissuing so many obscure 60s/70s recordings that mere mortals have no chance of owning since many of them are extremely scarce.

Their latest compilation "Eccentric Soul: The Shiptown Labelgathers together the recordings of the Norfolk, VA, Shiptown label and subsidiary How Big owned by Noah Biggs run out of his Nimrod Record Store.

It includes 25 tracks recorded between 1965-1977, several of which have already been digitally released as singles recently, that you can now acquire for less than half the price  (and a tiny fraction of the cost on original vinyl) as the full compilation is only £9.99, and a tenner probably wouldn't even buy one of the singles on vinyl.

A surprising inclusion, you may think, is The Anglos Northern Soul tune "Since You've Been Gone" which is only listed for the Scepter release but was originally released on Shiptown 009 before getting a national release.

If your going to try and explain to anyone what Northern Soul is then direct them to Dream Team "I'm Not Satisfied" which is actually a 1967 answer song to Jagger/Richard's "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" released on James Gregory's Norfolk based Gregory label but published by Biggs' Nimbig Music, hence it's inclusion.

I haven't checked fully, but the compilation must consist of at least one side from almost all the releases on the label as Shiptown only released around 16 singles and How Big around 4.

The compilation is also available on vinyl from Bandcamp with a release date given of 18 Aug 2022.

NB as what often happens, the Spotify playlist is not showing artist names so click on cover image for full track listing.
