SoulStrutter [2022-05-11] - Won't You Join The Band (A Deep & Soulful Female Vintage Mix)

More 'self-indulgence' today whilst still waiting for some 'decent' new music to materialise. To rectify the situation of yesterdays deep and soulful mix consisting of mainly males, for today's mix I've dipped into the collection to extract females only tunes.

A Curtis Mayfield song originally recorded in 1964 by Gene Chandler, kicks off proceedings with Loleatta Holloway's 1976 slower paced version from her Gold Mind album Loleatta. What may be a surprise selection is Taylor Dayne's version of the Bee Gees song recorded by Al Green.

A song that perhaps many won't be familiar is a tune I've been plugging on the blog by Jo Armstead "Won't You Join The Band (On My Caravan)"as it was a limited private press 7" on her own Preacher Rose label from 1990, but was included later on a CD "A Stone Good Lover" in 1996.

Another that may also not be so quite well known is the flip side to Alice Clark's extremely rare Northern Soul favourite "Heaven's Will (Must Be Obeyed)" but it has featured on a few compilations.

There are few evergreens such as Lorraine Ellison "Stay With Me" and Millie Jackson's "There You Are" and others, perhaps lesser known to some, but will be well known to the connoisseurs of soul.

  1. Wonderful compilation to enjoy Deep Soul exclusively by women. This is a good theme well done.
