The latest single from Block & Crown (aka Adri Blok) features Astaire
and is a reworking of Surface's "Happy" from 1986 due out on 1 Jul 2022, but as is often the case is available on Traxsouce now.
Surface had a minor UK hit with it reaching #56 but it was huge in the clubs and made Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 and #2 R&B stateside. They went on to have four #1 R&B hits including "The First Time" which was also a Hot 100 #1. The group was a trio from New Jersey who were originally staff writers for EMI who wrote songs recorded by the likes of Sister Sledge, New Edition and Gwen Guthrie.
One of the members, David Townsend, was the son of Ed Townsend who wrote
songs for Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" album, including the title
track, as well as having his own recording career.
Townsend and David Conley were members on Port Authority in the 70s (who didn't release anything) with Conley joining Mandrill after Port Authority split and recorded on "New Worlds", the album that has the modern soul gem "Too Late" on it. The third member was drummer Everett Collins who worked with The Isley Brothers, as did David Townsend, and they formed Sunrize with Conley joining later before the trio left to form Surface.
