Diquan Julius is from South Carolina and, until he moved to
Washington D.C., was a gospel singer until 2019.
He's released a five track EP "Retrospective" on 4 Mar 2022 which I have very mixed feelings about. I'm afraid the
opening track "Heat Of The Night" was sent as a promo last week which I decided not to post as it's an
80s style pop/rock tune. Two other tracks are previous singles "Let's Dance" (Aug 2021) and "Lala Land" (Feb 2020).
Of the three new tracks, I can only choose "Moonwalking On Love" which I'm afraid is just 'OK'. The clear standout on the EP has to be
Lala Land". A better inclusion on the EP would have been his excellent single "Soap Box" from Feb 2021.
I sense that he hasn't found his direction yet with the
R&B flavoured single "In My Feelings", and the pop oriented 80s style
material evident on this EP. My advice, for what it's worth, would be
sticking to what he is best at i.e. the gospel/deep soul style like "Soap Box" which I'll include to show the stark difference as it is excellent. He
has undoubted talent (listen to "Soap Box" and his live performance of "A
Change Is Gonna Come" and "Ordinary People" below) but needs stronger
material.
Of course this is only my personal opinion and have posted the EP for you to disagree but, for me, I think he has set the bar with "Soap Box" and would love to hear more like that from him.
