I think that basically this album by Jimetta Rose "The Gift - Around The Way" consists of vocal tracks overlaid on beats released between
2013-17 on Street Corner Music's
The Gift series of albums Vol. 1 - Vol. 10.
Certainly, one of the better tracks, "Still Here" is based on Denmark Vessey "Pump Yo' Brakes" on "The Gift Vol. 9", which in turn samples Jean Plum's modern soul classic "Here I Go Again" on Hi (1976). I don't have the time, nor inclination, to detect what's used in all the
others!
This won't be to everyone's taste as it's sort of off-center, soul meets
jazz meets hip-hop and sounds a bit dissonant, but it's different, edgy and
pushes boundaries if that's your thing.
To break you in gently, my two picks are "Still Here" (familiarity?) and "Oohs & Ahhs"
Jimetta Rose is from L.A. and has released two previous albums "The Barber's Daughter" in 2010 and "The Light Bearer" in 2016.
"Black Light" was released as a single on 14 Feb.
