Lonnie Hill [1986] - Galveston Bay [10 TEN 111-12]

This has got to be one of the best 80s independent modern soul releases ever.  He re-recorded it in 2008 with a different, more jazz flavoured, mix which, for me, is not as good as the original, but you can decide for yourself.

Lonnie Hill [1986] - Galveston Bay [10 TEN 111-12]

For some strange reason this only ever got a UK single release (on both 7" and 12").  Originally released on 'You Got Me Running' album on Urban Sound in 1984 which is the short 4:03 version whilst the 12" is almost 6 mins.

I never tire of listening to this track, having bought it on release after hearing it on Robbie Vincent's and Steve Aggasild's radio shows mid 80s.

Lonnie Hill [1984] - Cold Cold Winter (In The Ghetto) [Urban Sound US-778]

Modern Soul christmas song plugged by Richard Searling

Lonnie Hill [2008] - Back On The Scene [Hillshideaway]

Having previously only released the one album in 1984, Lonnie Hill made a comeback and in 2008 (24 years later) releasing a 16 track CD with several cover versions and including a remake of Galveston Bay.   I'm not sure what age he would be when he recorded this album, but his voice sounds quite 'old' on some of the tracks.  It would appear that he continued recording and released 'No Games' in 2004, 'I Gotta Be Me' in 2012 and a gospel album 'The Gospel In Me' in 2017.

Glenn Jones - Keep On Doin' / I Am Somebody / Meet Me Halfway There

The 80s often tend to get a 'wide-berth' when it come to quality soul with the advent of synths and the omission of real musicians.  However, there were some great releases, you just have to dig deeper to find them.

Here's 3 of the Glenn Jones' best 80s tracks.

Glenn Jones [1983] - Keep On Doin' [RCA Victor PB 14319]

This is the full lenght 12""/album version.

Live footage of him performing the track live with Meli'sa Morgan replacing Genobia Jeter at the 25th Blackpool Luxury Weekender 3-5 Jan 2020.

Glenn Jones [2018] - I Am Somebody [RCA Victor PD 13436]

His debut single which featured The Jones Girls on backing vocals.

Glenn Jones [2018] - I Am Somebody (Joey Negro Finessed Remix) [Z ZEDDLP045z]

Taken from Remixed With Love Vol. 3

Glenn Jones [1984] - Meet Me Halfway There [RCA Victor NFL1-8036]

Released on 45/12" as flip to Everlasting Love (issues only not on promos) and was also on the Finesse album.

Gentleman June Gardner [1966] - It's Gonna Rain / Last Night [EmArcy E-4050]

A 'Marmite' record that has been huge in Northern Soul circles over recent years by Gentleman June Gardner. I suspect that it probably originated in, and migrated from, the Popcorn scene in Belgium.

The tune was written by Sonny Bono and was originally recorded by Sonny & Cher as the B side to 'I Got You Babe' and on their debut album 'Look At Us' in 1965.  I've put both versions up for comparison.

Gentleman June Gardner [1966] - It's Gonna Rain [EmArcy E-4050]

Albert Samuel Gardner was a jazz drummer and band leader from Louisiana and worked in Lionel Hampton's bands.  This is a NOLA production so no doubt Wardell Quezergue was involved in arrangement.

As far as I can tell he released 3 45s and an album 'Bustin' Out' released in 1966 which contained both sides of this 45 and his first 45 on Blue Rock 99 Plus 1 / Mustard Greens.  His other 45 is an instrumental of Tennessee Waltz / The Jolly Little Megget on Hep' Me in 1971... which is of no interest here!

Interestingly, 45Cat lists an unreleased Blue Rock 45 of this record with Cat. No. B-4050 but no label scan. EmArcy was a Mercury jazz label and as Blue Rock was Mercury's blues/R&B/Soul label perhaps they decided a release on EmArcy was more appropriate?

Gentleman June Gardner [1966] - Last Night [EmArcy E-4050]

Hammond-driven cover of The Mar-Kays hit which was the official A side.

Sonny & Cher [1965] - It's Gonna Rain [Atco 45-6359]

This is the stereo 45 version which is a different take to the LP version.

Tommy McGee [1981] - Now That I Have You / Stay With Me [TMG MT 11979]

Related to the previous post for some releases on DT records, is this double-sided two-stepper by Tommy McGee on TMG distributed by DT which got a reissue by Numero in 2016. An original would cost around £200-£250.

Fourth Day [198?] - On My Way Up / You Turn Me On [DT 103A / DT 104B]

DT records was a Detroit label owned by Dennis Jerome Talley who was married to Darlene Love. DT released around 15 45s predominantly in the 80s.  Probably the best known is Emmanuel Laskey's modern soul classic 'I'd Rather Leave On My Feet' written and recorded (first) by Cylde Milton on Disco Tac, the label's only release.  The backing track from which is used on the flip to the Fourth Day flip side You Turn Me On.

Fourth Day [198?] - On My Way Up [DT 103A]

Fourth Day [198?] - You Turn Me On [DT 104B]

Magnificents [1981] - On The Way Up [DT 103]

The next DT release was an alternative version of the 2 Fourth Day sides by the Magnificents, re-using the Clyde Milton/Emmanuel Laskey backing once again on the flip.

There's a stark difference between the quality of the 45 RPM Version and the Album Version Vocal.  I much prefer the former as the long Album Version loses the soul and turns in more into a club mix with added synth.

Whilst I am here I may as well post the Clyde Milton and Emmanuel Laskey tracks.

Clyde Milton [197?] - I'd Rather Leave On My Feet [CM 101]

The original version.  Milton only recorded one further single. It was a message song on DT called Leave Drugs Alone.

Clyde Milton [197?] - Disco Funk [CM 101]

No sound clip available

Emmanuel Laskey [1980] - I'd Rather Leave On My Feet (Part 1) [DT 100]

Emmanuel Laskey/Lasky released around 15 45s mainly in 60s (predominantly on Thelma) and a few in 70s.  This was his last release (45Cat states 1977) but most believe it was 1980.  He released another 45 on DT in 1973? Remember Me Always Pts I & II which may have been a reissue of the Stag 45 as it has the same Cat. No.
