Morris Chestnut [2023] - Too Darn Soulful / You Don't Love Me Anymore [Numero Group #2600]

We're not sure exactly when this was digitally re-issued but it came up on our Spotify feed after listening to Frankie Karl & The Chevrons just posted. It's appropriate as it's another Northern Soul classic (broken at Blackpool Mecca) with a great flip by Morris Chestnut with "Too Darn Soulful" / "You Don't Love Me Anymore".

In actual fact the titles were reversed for the original release on Bell's Amy imprint in 1967 as "You Don't Love Me Anymore" was the official A side. It was later bootlegged owing to popularity on a look-a-like Renfro label which may seem odd until your appreciate that it was published by Renfro. This is possibly why Numero Group has used the Renfro and not the Amy label facsimile. We believe that renown bootlegger Simon Soussan may have been behind the bootleg and would have opted for Renfro as many other popular sounds were also on the label. It was legally reissued by John Anderson's Grapevine label in 1979 and again by Kent in 2007 and has featured on umpteen compilations over the years.

Numero Group featured both sides on their 2020, 30 track, "Eccentric Soul: The Renfro Label" compilation and "Too Darn Soulful" earlier this year in July on "Eccentric Northern Soul".

Chestnut was a member of The Vows (with his cousin Ralph Chestnut who was earlier a member of The Cheerios) who released a handful of a singles in the early 60s including one on Motown's V.I.P. imprint in 1965 and then The Sound-Masters and The Attractions all of whom have had records played on the scene. He recorded a doo-wop single as James Washington Lee in 1962 on L&M both sides of which he wrote and The Vows were the backing group. This appears to be his only solo recording as Morris Chestnut. In the 70s he joined up with ex members of The Marvellos and formed Street Corner Symphony who released an album "Harmony Grits" and a couple of singles on Bang which gained them a deal with ABC where they released a further two albums but just one single, "Funk Machine" the title track of the first album "Little Funk Machine".

You 'may' recognise the name as his son, Morris Chestnut Jr, is an actor who made his movie debut the role of Ricky in "Boyz In The Hood" in 1991 along with another singer's son, Cuba Gooding Jr., the son of The Main Ingredient lead singer in the 70s. Morris Chestnut Jr now has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame as of 2022. It is believed that Chestnut himself did some parts in movies, such as Shaft.

Chestnut was not aware that many of his recordings, both solo and as a member of groups, were popular on the scene until the early 2000s as he had put the music business in his rear view mirror tired of being ripped off, same old story! He didn't even know that "Too Darn Soulful" had been released as he recorded it at Renfro who didn't release it but they must have leased or sold it to Bell for release without his knowledge. He was booked to appear at Prestatyn weekender in 2007, sadly he had a stroke not long before coming over but still came and performed.

Frankie Karl & The Chevrons [2023] - You Should'o Held On (Just A Little Tighter) / Boy Next Door [CAZIO]

Perhaps a coincidence that this has been reissued on 1 Sep with the Wigan Casino 50th anniversary looming, or not, but Frankie Karl & The Chevrons "You Should'o Held On" was a 'monster' sound there in the late 70s broken by Searling. He covered it up as The Showmen which was a good cover up as they have a similar sound. However, don't overlook the flip "Boy Next Door" which is probably the preferred tune for these day's tastes which we'd describe as a 'floater'.

It was also released as a white promo as The 7th Avenue Aviators on Congress in Dec 1965 but the the Philtown issue of Frankie Karl & The Chevrons was the original thought to be Sep 1965. The recordings are similar but not identical as the Philltown issue has a different intro and mix. Presumably a different mix was farmed out but no idea why the group name was changed? We'll post both and see if you can 'spot the difference' as it's not obvious.

Both fetch four figures (£2k-£3k) but the Philltown release (which has several label variants) is probably the harder one to find with the red issue possibly the rarest. There isn't even a label scan for it on Discogs or 45Cat, but we found a couple, one with a stamped promo on it and another autographed, apparently their is another alternate red label design. Note the difference in the title: "You Should Have Held On" rather than "You Should'o Held On".
Frankie C. (Carl?) Springs was born in 1945 and formed a gospel choir COGIC Singers, with Gloria Jones and Billy Preston as well as Edna Wright (aka Sandy Wynns the sister of Darlene Love), Andrae Crouch and Sandra 'Blinky' Williams. This release was his first recording. He was a member of The Tripps who released just one single on Victoria in 1967. In 1968 he cut a disc on Gene Dozier's D.C. Sound "Don't Be Afraid (Do As I Say)" as Frankie Karl & The Dreams, a lowrider favourite. It was reasonably successful and was picked up by Bell for distribution. He released a few more solo singles, one on In'Sight (which 45Cat dates as Sep 1967 but two of the other four listed are 1970), one for Liberty in 1970 and, what appears to be is final release on, Gordy in 1976.

Karl helped form The Chevrons along with Richard Prince (aka LaLa), Kenneth Calvert and Herbert 'Herbie' Holmes whilst serving in the US Air Force after which he returned to L.A. and was a member of the cast of Hair in the late 60s. He died in 2008 aged 63.

Stevie Wonder [1976] - Songs in the Key of Life [Tamla] (Full Album) 47th Anniversary

It's approaching the 50th anniversary of another landmark Motown album, remember Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On" half centenary was commemorated with an expanded reissue last month. Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" was released 47 years ago today on 28 Sep 1976.

Both Wonder and Gaye had disagreements with Berry Gordy over musical direction in the early 70s as both wanted to do their own thing and get away from the formulaic Motown sound. Gordy didn't like Gaye's "What's Going On" as he was concerned that the social and political statements may damage 'the brand'.  Both have been proven to be correct as that particular album has gone on to be one of the most seminal musical works in music, never mind just soul, history consistently topping Rolling Stone's 100 best albums of all time. It currently tops their 2020 poll with "Songs in the Key of Life" positioned at #4.

In 1975 Wonder was seriously considering quitting music and prepared a farewell tour, remember his previous album was titled "Fulfillingness' First Finale"! However, Motown persuaded him to sign a 7 year / 7 album deal with full artistic control. The alleged $37m offer (the largest recording contract at the time) no doubt helped to twist his arm to stay. "Songs in the Key of Life" was his first of these albums and was his 18th studio album. It's a double album consisting of 21 tracks (the last 4 tracks were originally on a separate 7" EP) and won 3 Grammys: Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Performance (Male) and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male for "I Wish".

The album produced five singles, two reaching #1 on Billboard's Hot 100, i.e. "I Wish" and "Sir Duke" / "He's Misstra Know-It-All", the other three being "Isn't She Lovely",  "Another Star" and "As".

Of course many other tracks are well known even though they were never released as singles. For example "Summer Soft" was covered recently by Karlos Edwards and "Pastime Paradise" has been sampled multiple times, perhaps most famously by Coolio in "Gangsta's Paradise" in 1995? "As" (which featured George Benson on guitar) we featured only yesterday by The Family Tree on the forthcoming  "With Love Volume 2" compilation and "Another Star" (which featured Herbie Hancock on keys) has been covered many times, perhaps one of the earliest by Joe Bataan's LaSo in 1977 and another notable cover by (Sister) Kathy Sledge in 1995 with others including Ike Noble (1980) and Soul II Soul's Caron Wheeler (2003).

Everyone knows, but perhaps doesn't necessarily 'love', "Isn't She Lovely" which surprisingly wasn't a hit and wasn't released as a single in the US because Wonder refused to shorten the track from the album's 6:34 for 7" release. However, it was covered by David Parton and reached #4 on the UK pop chart in 1977 which is perhaps why we assume that it was a hit single? Wonder's version did eventually become a hit in the UK after he performed it at the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Cornell C.C. Carter & Narada Michael Walden [2023] - I'd Rather Dance With You (Mixes) [Self Released]

Long time friends Cornell C.C. Carter and Narada Michael Walden collaborate on a new, jointly written, single "I'd Rather Dance With You".

Walden, now 71, is of course best remembered for a series of hit records in the late 70s such as "I Don't Want Nobody Else (To Dance with You)", "I Shoulda Loved Ya" and "Tonight I'm Alright". However, he began his career as a jazz drummer in the early 70s working with artists including Chick Corea, Jeff Beck, Alphonse Mouzon, Weather Report, James Mason prior to releasing his debut solo album "Garden Of Love Light" in 1976. He later became a songwriter/producer, after being mentored by Quincy Jones, for stars such as Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey along with a whole host of others including Stacy Lattisaw.

Carter's music is much loved in the UK especially since his 2016 album "In The Moment" and regularly tops the UK Soul Chart as he did with his last single "Sometimes" with Brian Power.

Their new single together comes with four variants, Radio Soul, Club Mix, House Mix and Euro Mix, so all bases covered there! Oddly, the Radio Soul mix has not been included on the Spotify release today, so we've included it below.

Low-Down [2023] - Music Is The Answer / Somebody [Stream #STR011]

Low-down were formed in San Diego in the late 70s originally consisting of the founders John Lowe, Raul Gallegos (lead vocalist), Angel Hayes (guitar soloist), with Ken Reeves (Bass Guitar), Skip Pendleton (rhythm guitar player), Ray Baker (keyboard), Raymond Gulley (vocalist) and Prince Seawood (vocalist) joining later.

They released their first of only three singles ("Music Is The Answer" / "Somebody") on Javar (possibly a self-release as it's the only release on the label) in 1982 (which Discogs lists as 1979). The A side is a modern soul / boogie tune with flip being more funk oriented. Both sides are being reissued by Alberto Zanini (Cannonball Records) and Yann Vatiste (Epsilon Records) on their joint venture Stream label and is available to order now via Epsilon website.

Two more singles followed later in the 80s: "Hanging" / "Beautiful People" in 1986 and "You Got Me Hanging" (vocal and instrumental) both on Music City, again the only two releases listed for the label. The latter may be the same song as "Hanging" but we've been unable to find a sample of "Hanging" to compare.

We are informed that "Music Is The Answer" peaked at #72 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and #20 on the R&B chart and also reached #61 on the UK Singles Chart, however, we are unable to confirm this as we can't find it listed in Joel Whitburn's book of R&B Hit Singles.
