GiddyGang & Vuyo [2023] - Art Over Profit [Self Released] (Full EP)

GiddyGang was formed at Staffeldtsgate NLA College in Oslo in 2019 after a group of classically trained musicians started jamming together. The core band is Sarah Nærø Pettersen (vocals), Sigmund Vestrheim (drums), Bård Kristian Kylland (keys), Kevin Andersen (guitar) and Martin Stapnes (bass).

The band has garnered plaudits from artists including Robert Glasper, Mac Ayres, and Jazzy Jeff, who actually featured on their single "Queendom" (18 Aug) which appears on their new EP "Art Over Profit" released on 20 Sep.

The six track EP also includes their other two singles this year, "Believe It" (6 Sep) and "Let Me In" (2 Jun). All tracks feature Norwegian/South African rapper Vuyo.

The standout for us is "Sinking", a shorter, demo, version of which featured on their debut album/mixtape "Giddy Mix" in Oct '20 (included below).

Tyla [2023] - Water (DJ Soulchild Remix) [Humble Savage Records]

Swiss based DJ Soulchild (Denny Sutton) follows his recent remix on Anthony Hamilton's "Best Of Me" (utilising Howard Johnson's "Keeping Love New") with an unofficial remix of a summer Amapiano viral smash "Water" by Johannesburg's Tyla Seethal.

Tyla broke through with her 2019 single "Getting Late".

Denny tells us: "The original version of this song was without doubt one of my favourite songs of the Summer. I fell in love with it the very first moment i heard it and instantly knew it was going to be absolutely huge. And i've always been a huge fan of producers like Kaytranada, Pomo, Young Franco and Jafunk, so i felt like combining those sonics with this song would sound really cool."

Sweatson Klank [2023] - A Free Mind [Friends Of Friends] (Full Album)

We first came across Sweatson Klank (Thomas Wilson who was formerly known as Take) in June with a single "The Limit" feat. AYA.. It was the second single from his new album "A Free Mind" which was released in full on Friday (22 Sep) and since then he appears to have drip fed another six singles from it.

He's a beatmaker/MC/producer from L.A. whose catalogue goes back as far as 1999 under various aliases such as Take, Kirsnick Ball, The Rocket and his real name Thomas Wilson. He seems to have adopted the name Sweatson Klank around 2012 and has 35 singles/EPs and now six albums under that moniker and many more under his various aliases.

Several tracks have a retro 80s feel.

Family Company feat. MacKenzie [2023] - I Like It [FamCo Records]

Family Company is an L.A. based collective incepted by the convergence of Josh Teitelbaum (drums), Alex Kyhn (bass), and Jason Goldstein (wurlitzer). They have backed various artists as a rhythm section, along with putting on tribute shows to Bill Withers, Donny Hathaway, Ray Charles, and most recently Stevie Wonder.

Their latest single "I Like It", and their last "Lockstep", features McKenzie. The artwork for both is identical suggesting perhaps that an EP/album is on its way?

A nice little retro funky groove.

Diddy feat. Teyana Taylor [2023] - Closer To God [Love Records] (Select Tracks)

A 'bumper' album from Diddy (aka Puff Day aka Sean Combs) "The Love Album: Off The Grid" which we didn't give a lot of time to on first listen as we skipped through the 27 tracks and felt that most of it was R&B and hip-hop and were put off by names like Busta Rhymes, Ty Dollar $ign and Justin Bieber!!!

It was initially released on 15 Sep with 23 tracks and then another version with an additional four tracks was released on 20 Sep.

However, one of the tracks may be of more of interest to soul listeners, "Closer To God" feat. Teyana Taylor.
