Ty Causey [2023] - It Feels Like Love [Tyvonn Records]

The third single from Ty Causey's new forthcoming album "Faithful & True" (his fist since "U-Turn" Nov '21) is "Feels Like Love" which follows "Don't Squeeze The Fruit" (1 Jul) and  "My Love Zone" (7 Jul).

Ty is from Fort Wayne, IN, and emerged in 1998 when he came to the attention of smooth jazz saxophonist Najee who, after hearing one of his demos, invited him to work on his "Morning Tenderness" album for which Ty wrote several songs and performed BGVs. He went on to tour with Najee until 2004 when he released his debut album "N-Tysing" and continued to release a slew of well received smooth soul albums through the  2000s and  2010s.

Mind & Matter [2023] - 1514 Oliver Avenue (Basement) [Numero Group] (Full Album)

Mind & Matter was an 11-piece band from Minneapolis who released just one single ("I'm Under Your Spell" / "Sunshine Lady") on their own label M&M in 1977 which has been a  modern soul in-demander for many years.

They recorded a batch of 'basement' demos which Numero Group released for the first time in 2013 on CD and vinyl consisting of nine tracks. The album is named after the address of where it was recorded. "1514 Oliver Avenue (Basement)".It has been reissued digitally today.

Neither of the single tracks are included on the album as they were released as a single in 2013 (included below)

The significance of the release is that it was the first foray into song-writing, arranging and performing for a 16 year old Jimmy 'Jam' Harris who plays keys on the album.

The rare video footage below a live version of "Disco Child" at Uncle Sam's in Minneapolis.

The 2013 release is still available on Bandcamp with an additional track.

Smoke Inc. [2023] - Waitin' For Love / It's the Same Old Song [Mr Bongo #MRB7212]

A big ticket item by Smoke Inc. on original vinyl which has been known in modern soul circles for many years. A copy will set you back over two grand as it was a limited private press. There are only five listed on Popsike.

The main side "Waitin' For Love" was featured on a Mr Bongo compilation "With Love: Vol. 1 (Compiled by Miche)" last year (Sep '22). The flip "It's the Same Old Song" is a cover of the Four Tops 1965 song.

It's the first 7" from a new series from Mr Bongo  in partnership with Miche, available on vinyl from Bandcamp

Smoke, Inc. were Roy Schmall (vocals/keys), Stan Terry (lead vocals/harmonica), Michael 'Ollie' Schotka (vocals /bass), Keith Stafford (vocals/drums) and Archie Williams Jr (guitar). A little titbit, Stafford co-wrote Life's Northern Soul biggie "Tell Me Why"

They released another single the same year before this one "Ain't That Nothin'" / "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". Again the flip was a cover, of the Hayes & Porter written, Sam & Dave hit in 1966. In 1982 they released a four track self-titled EP on 12".

Wolfgang Valbrun [2023] - Cyclone [Jalapeno]

Wofgang Valbrun was born and raised in New York, moved to Paris as a teenager, then lived in Venezuela for a while before returning to Paris. He recorded four albums with London based band Ephemerals between 2014-20 and guested with Dutch trio Kraak & Smaak.

With a name like Wolfgang you would have expected him to be German but no German connections that we can detect unless of course that's where his parents/descendants were from originally before emigrating to the US.

His debut solo single "Cyclone" has quite an authentic 60s sound that has that talcum powder inducing tempo, so we suspect the rare soul crowd will lap this up, but of course it will have to be put on vinyl before it's taken seriously and the 'Soul Gestapo' allow it to be played out 😉! It's the first track from a forthcoming album "Flawed By Design" due on Jalapeno in 2024.

Stormy [2023] The Devastator b/w I Won't Stop To Cry [Numero Group #NUM4587]

Last month Numero Group released a pretty solid compilation titled "Eccentric Northern Soul". It contained the flip side of the Stormy 45 "I Won't Stop To Cry". the A side, "The Devastator", had been previously released on another Numero Group compilation "Eccentric Soul: Twinight's Lunar Rotation" in 2007.

They are now reunited as a digital and vinyl release of the 1967 Twinight single.

Stormy was John Colley from Chicago who was also a producer and produced Saxie Russell's "Psychedelic Soul" (Thomas 1968). He released another single as a member of The Lost Family in 1974.

Read what rare soul dealer John Manship says about the single:

The hardest decision with this Chicago rarity is "which side to play first" .

Whilst "I won't stop to cry" is a truly glorious male-harmony Northern Soul dancer, the seldom heard "The Devastator" carries a certain edge and more than a nod to their soul-neighbours in Detroit with the male-harmony chorus triggering memories of some Motor-City trophies. Two totally standout tunes on one disc.

Let's start with "Cry" a seamless vocal-group dancer, driven by rattling percussion and subtle horns; all nestling a polished lead vocal, supported by consummate male harmony choruses, fusing into one very slick mid-tempo dancer...

"Devastator" again underlines this group's class, a little more potent with a wordless male chorus that screams "Northern Soul" a two sider to reckon with and elusive enough to be dropped in the rarest sets.

All guided by a man who previously helped construct Northern Soul classic Saxie Russell's - Psychedelic Soul - then went to take "Stormy" into the sadly one recording by "Lost Family", I say sad, because vocal groups of this calibre deserve more than just a couple of shots and releasing singles..

These guys were good, click the impressive soundfile to hear just how good

VA [2023] - Ian Levine's Northern Soul Classics, Vols 1-5 [One Media iP]

Ian Levine can be quite a Marmite and divisive figure to many on the Northern Soul scene. Undoubtedly, along with Colin Curtis at the Blackpool Mecca's Highland Room in the early to mid 70s, he was responsible for introducing many records which became classics.

The rot set in for many with the introduction of new releases into the playlist in the mid 70s which became know as, and still is, 'modern soul'. Many outside the scene still don't quite understand the term but it was a term used at the time to differentiate between traditional 60's stompers and 70s productions as for many Neanderthal / Northern Soulies soul music apparently ended on New Years eve 1969!

In the mid 70s Levine started producing records which were known as tailor mades, as they were new productions emulating the Northern Soul sound. His first foray was The Exciters "Reaching for The Best" in 1975 followed by records by, then unknown artists, Doris Jones, Barbara Pennington, Tyrone Ashley, Evelyn Thomas and one of his best James Wells. This, to many, was the antithesis of the 'spirit' of the scene which was always about finding undiscovered 'authentic' oldies.

Levine then instigated Hi-NRG music in the 80s and in the 90s co-wrote one, and co-produced three, tracks on Take That's debut album and worked with The Pasadenas.

He founded Motorcity Records in the late 80s which went bust and then Center City Records. Both specialised in recording well known (and lesser known) Detroit artists, either re-recording well known Northern Soul tunes or his own compositions in conjunction with other writers. He must have written close to a thousand songs.

The reason for all the preamble is that on Friday five compilations, all consisting of 25 songs, have been released as "Ian Levine's Northern Soul Classics", Vol. 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5.

It's too easy to dismiss them as his sound is pretty formulaic, but there are often songs that surprise. We haven't checked the track listing comprehensively but many, if not all, have been released previously, often many times on many different compilations.

We won't embed Spotify link (as they will take up too much space 125 songs!) but will provide links to them on Spotify. We may at a future time cherry pick some of the best into a playlist, as an interesting one which looks new is former Elgins lead singer Saundra Edwards taking on what we thought was Diane Jenkins' "Two-A-Way Zone" but it's a new song remixed by Nigel Lowis.
