The Marvellos [2023] - Something's Burning: Rare Soul Sides [Warner Music] (Full EP)

A great little compilation of all Willie Hutch penned songs by The Marvellos. Five of the seven songs were released on their first three singles for Warner Bros in 1966. The first two on Loma and the third on the parent label. Two other songs were previously unreleased at the time but one featured on a Kent 7" in 2016 and the other on a Kent 7" available only via their box set "Loma Northern Soul, Classics & Revelations" 1965-1968" released in Jan '23.

The Marvellos were a group formed in L.A. in 1962 (not to be confused with another 50s L.A. Marvellos or the Chicago group The Marvellows) that included Jesse Harris, Milton Hayes, Harold Harris, Willie Holley and Lance Porter. They released two singles on Exodus in 1962 with their first ("She Told Me Lies") getting national distribution on Warner Bros. Reprise imprint. They were later signed to Warner's soul imprint Loma in 1965 which released many singles now revered on the Northern Soul scene.

They had some local success with their first release "We Go Together" (which was styled around The Temptations' "It's Growing") but years later the Northern Soul scene picked up on the more uptempo flip "Something's Burnin'" which has been a popular tune over the years. Their later releases failed to register and the group members spent many years as background session singers.

In the mid 70s two of the members, Jesse Harris and Milton Hayes, formed Street Corner Symphony with Maurice Chestnut (who we believe is the same Morris Chestnut of "Too Darn Soulful" fame as there is a distinct likeness), Lawrence Miller and Luigi Smith. They released three album and only three singles between 1975-1981.
