The debut album from Output / Input "Forward Motion" has finally arrived, released today.
We waxed lyrical about it two weeks ago when it was serviced to media outlets and posted samples. Several of the five new songs have already been on rotation of the better radio shows.
The singles already released from the album include "I'm In Love", "Smiling Faces" and "Someone I Used To Love", all featuring Antonio McLendon, along with "Here I Go Again" (the only cover on the album which features Audrey Wheeler-Downing and Brent Carter) and "Really No Chance" feat. Katie Holmes-Smith.
Four of the five new songs feature Antonio McLendon with the final new song being a new version of O'Bryan's 1981 rare groove favourite "Doin' Alright" recorded with O'Bryan, which has been the track receiving a lot of attention in particular.
We commented two weeks ago that we fully expected the album to be hitting the top of charts and already it is #2 on Soul Associates Top 30 and could well make the #1 slot this week as Joe Leavy has been holding the position for six weeks now.
If you truly appreciate new soul music then this album is an essential purchase as every track stands on it's own i.e. all thriller no filler. Also, as five singes have already been released, the retail price for digital is reduced to £6.49. The album will also be available on CD with a bonus track in a few (3) weeks time and we are informed that there will be a double album on vinyl, with additional bonus tracks, later in the year.
Output/Input were formed during Covid-19 lockdown by bassist, composer,
producer and arranger Melvin Lee Davis the musical director for Chaka Khan,
who he still regularly tours with. He has also worked
with George Benson, Lee Ritenour, George Duke, Will Downing,
Lalah Hathaway, Patti Austin, Ledisi, and Angie Stone among many
others.
The band's co-founders are known as the Triple H Horns comprising Nick
Mead (trumpet), Jacob Shaw (saxophone) and Patrick Hayes
(trombone)
They are a truly diverse and international group featuring members from
countries including the USA, UK, Germany, Hungary and South Korea with
all tracks being recorded remotely across multiple
continents.
The other members, in addition to Melvin Lee Davis (Bass) and Triple H
Horns, are Jay Williams (Drums), Kanghyun Bu (Guitar), Kevin
Chokan (Acoustic/Guitar), Daeun Kim (Keyboards), Jesse Milliner
(Keyboards), Noval Smith (Keyboards), Adam Kovacs (Percussion), Bryony
Moody (Cello) and Olivia Holland (Violin).
Antonio McLendon, who features on no fewer than seven of the albums ten songs, has been the best kept secret in soul music until
recently who we first featured in Sep '21 with "My Baby First" & "How I Feel". He was introduced to the band by their songwriter Mark Love which was a stroke of genius.
