The fifth release from Andy Bellwood's Last Bastion Records is an EP of
covers of two early 60s soul songs on the A side along with one of Betty
Wright's "Tonight Is The Night" from the 70s on the flip.
The A side contains a version of the Barbara Lewis penned and recorded song
"Hello Stranger" (1963) on which Monica Rocha is joined by
Malik Malo both of whom have featured here previously, lending their voices
to singles with
The Notations.
Also on the A side is a Smokey Robinson song recorded originally by
Mary Wells in 1962, "The One Who Really Loves You".
Most will know that there is a strong scene in California instigated, in
the main, by Chicanos (Mexican Americans) which has been labelled Lowrider
owing to them cruising around in customised (lowered) vintage cars that
began in Chicano culture in the 40s. They resurrect and discover sweet soul
music from, in general, the 60s and 70s. A scene has developed from that
with labels such as Silent Giant (who released all three tracks digitally
between 2019-22) and Industry Music Group releasing new covers, and
occasionally original songs, in the same style.
The EP is available to pre-order exclusively from
Detour Records
for £13.99 with a release date of 2 Jun '21. Any remining stock left
after pre-order retailing at £15.99
