As alluded to on Monday when we posted the collaborative single between ROGERSMITH MUSIC feat. Cherrelle, "All The Love I Need", Alexander O'Neal released a new four track EP "Is this Seat Taken" on 2 May '23 which we have only just got around to posting.
Now based in the UK since around 2000, O'Neal will be 70 this year and,
after almost 50 years in the music business, announced his Farewell Tour
he has called "Time to Say Goodbye". Fifteen dates have, so far,
been confirmed commencing on 8 Sep '23 in Sheffield up to 7 Jan '24 at
Royal Albert Hall, London, with more to be added. This EP, then,
could well be his final recording.
His biggest hits were duets with Cherrelle, "Saturday Love" (1986) and "Never Knew Love Like This Before" (1988) which both peaked at #2 on the R&B charts. Surprisingly,
the song he is perhaps best remembered for, "If You Were Here Tonight", didn't make the Hot 100 but reached #17 R&B in 1985. Other hits
included "Innocent", "A Broken Heart Can Mend", "What's Missing", "Fake" and "Criticize" all between 1985-87.
To the matter at hand, the new EP, three tracks you might say are
typical of O'Neal's earlier material with the title track, "Is This Seat Taken" having more of a contemporary vibe and is our selection. The song
features Robert Smith who Spotify has linked to the lead singer of The
Cure which would be very surprising if correct!
