Numero Group has reissued a one-off single by
The Newday which was originally released in 1970 on the
Chicago On Top Records logo. The label was owned by Calvin Carter (who
was previously the A&R man at Vee-Jay owned by his sister Vivian
Carter and her husband James Bracken) which released only a handful of
singles, two by Bobby Rush, one from Shades Of Brown and this one by
The Newday.
Both sides are credited to group member Roosevelt Christmas with
Browley Guy "Wait A Minute Girl" and the B side "Just Another Reason" with Guy and Maurice Simpkins. However, "Just Another Reason" is a
Curtis Mayfield song which was recorded by
The Passions a year earlier, who Christmas was a member
of with El Anthony, Doyle Cole and John Coleman. I believe that The
Newday evolved from The Passions who recorded around five singles (but
only four different songs as they rotated between releases) on Tower
as they didn't release anything after 1969.
The song "Just Another Reason" was originally recorded by
The Fascinations in Dec 1967 on Mayfield and later by
Donny Hathaway and June Conquest on Curtom in 1972 with
Hathaway's name added to writer's credits.
Curiously all four versions are different lengths with The
Fascinations clocking in at only 1:50 yet Hathaway/Conquest's version
is 2:38, The Passions 2:15 and The Newday 2:25.
Both sweet soul tunes, the A side "Wait A Minute Girl" also fits in the crossover soul category.
