A new name to these pages is powerhouse gospel singer Earnest Pugh who has a five octave range. He debuted in 2006 and has released
around eleven albums since then. So quite how he has gone under our radar is
anyone's guess. Perhaps it may be that a lot of his material is more
traditional rather than contemporary gospel.
He is the seventh on nine siblings raised in Memphis, TN, now based in
Houston, TX. After unsuccessfully trying to get signed to gospel labels, he set
up his own EPM in 2006. He has achieved three Billboard Gospel Chart #1 hits and in 2012 had four
Stellar Award nominations for Artist of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year,
Contemporary Male Vocalist of the Year and Praise & Worship CD of the
Year for "Earnestly Yours".
His latest single "Keep Hope, Alive" is dedicated to Black History Month and the struggles of Black America released by Shanachie. The intro leaves you in no doubt that a deep
gospel song is about to commence with a preaching oration followed by a line
or two of "We Shall Overcome" before the main song where Pugh demonstrates
his vast vocal range.
It's possibly not going to be everyone's 'cuppa' but anyone who truly
appreciates soul music will 'get it' as this reflects the birth of the music
we love, so its good to get back to its roots every now and then.
