94 East [2022] - If We Don't / I'll Always Love You [Charly #6335]

Northern Soul followers of the blog will have noticed a couple of "Mountain of Soul" compilations from Charly Records posted in the last few weeks. The latest, "Mountain Of Soul Episode 2", on Sunday where we mentioned that the tracks were to be made available on vinyl.

Charly Records announced the opening of their store today and a few of the tracks are now available on 7".

One that is pretty sure to sell out is the 94 East single, which includes the track featured on the compilation "If We Don't"  along with "I'll Always Love You", as neither side has been available on 7" vinyl previously, although they did feature on a vinyl LP in 2016 "94East Featuring Prince".

The songs were recorded circa 1975-79 but, for whatever reason, were never released  at the time but have surfaced on a number of 94 East compilations subsequently.

The lead voice is that of Colonel Abrams with Prince on guitar and AndrĂ© Cymone was also a member. The group was based in Minneapolis, formed by Pepe Miller who was married to Prince's cousin and named after the Interstate 94. They disbanded when Prince rose to fame which is perhaps why the songs weren't released.

The single is available to pre-order from Charly for release on 9 Dec 2022. Watch these fly out and be up on Discogs for multiple times the face value within days! You have been warned, so if you want one get your order in now!

Charly states that there is a upcoming house mix of "I'll Always Love You".

Object Heavy [2022] - For The Better [Color Red]

Object Heavy is a four-pieced band from Arcata, CA, consisting Brian Swislow (keys), Leo Plummer (guitar), Ian Taylor (bass), and Sam Kaplan-Good (drums).

Their debut album "Love & Gravity", produced by Kelly Finnegan (Monophonics), is due out shortly. In the meantime their latest single is the superb "For The Better" released on 4 Nov. written by the band and Finnegan, If the rest of the material on the album is like this the we are in for a treat! I can see this being absolutely 'hammered' on modern soul dancefloors! It reminds me in tempo and feel to Sean Oliver's "You And Me" which was reissued last year by One World.

It's their fourth single this year and the only other release was from 2019 which is a Jam In The Van live EP.

Included below is a live video of them doing a cover of the Otis Redding classic.

Adi Oasis Feat. KIRBY [2022] - Adonis [Unity Records]

After performing in other bands for years, Adi Oasis went solo in 2018 as Adeline, (Adeline M. Petricien) releasing an album alongside two EPs and collaborating with the likes of Masego, Blue Lab Beats, The Shapeshifters and others and writing and producing under the moniker Nightshade with her partner Morgan Wiley .

She goes from strength to strength with her last single, "Get It, Got It", being arguably her best. Not resting on her laurels having released that only on 16 Oct, hot on its heels comes a new single featuring KIRBY (Kirby Lauryen Dockery), another artist with a popular current single "Take Care" (13 Oct), on a song written together called "Adonis" (posted on promo last week 7 Nov) which is out today (16 Nov 2022). Note, that the promo version was clean but this one is explicit!

Kirby is also known for her writing being behind the global chart topper "FourFiveSeconds" by Rhianna, Kanye West and even Paul Mcartney.

The new single holds a retro-futuristic sound filled with trumpets, jazz rhythms and smooth harmonies from the two singers with its own unique style.
