Roy Hamilton / Charlie Thomas [2022] - My Peaceful Forest / Don't Let Me Know [Izipho Soul #ZP81]

Izipho Soul released their 80th single in early Jul (Split Decision Band) and #84 has just been posted Vasti Jackson, so what happened to 81 to 83? With pressing plant delays they are slightly out of sequence but 81 is also now available to pre-order from Izipho Soul with a release date of 10 Aug 2022.

It consists of two previously unreleased songs from Roy Hamilton and ex Drifter Charlie Thomas until they were issued on Kent's 1998 "Bill Haney’s Atlanta Soul Brotherhood" 24 track CD compilation.

Bill Hanley owned the Atlanta, GA, Chant label and is an acknowledged genius of Southern Soul. In an interview with UK soul aficionado Rod Dearlove, the editor of the much respected Voices From The Shadows magazine, Hanley recalled that Roy Hamilton came to town to work the clubs and Bill had the dramatic song "My Peaceful Forest" that he somehow persuaded Hamilton to record. Hamilton died in 1969 of a brain haemorrhage aged only 40, so this must be a mid to late 60s recording. He had two #1 R&B chart hits with songs that are now standards, "You'll Never Walk Alone" and "Unchained Melody", in the mid 50s. By the early 60s his career was on the decline and hit records dried up but he will always be remembered by the Northern Soul scene for his self-written song "Crackin' Up Over You" on RCA Victor 1966.

Similarly, whilst in town to perform, he got Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Charlie Thomas to record "Don’t Let Me Know". The original recording comes in at just over two minutes (2:13) but Izipho Soul have had an extended version cleared for this release. So, as the Spotify version is not the same version on the 7", I've included the 3:52 Izipho Soul Soundcloud sound file.

The label artwork reflects the design of the original Chant label.

Vasti Jackson [2022] - I'm Still in Love With You / I'm So Glad (We Are Back Together) [Izipho Soul #ZP84]

Just prior to that in 2013 an album "New Orleans Rhythm Soul Blues", from which "I'm So Glad (We Are Back Together)" will be paired with the former on a new 7" single from Izipho Soul.

The Mighty Typhoons [2022] - One More Chance / I'm Com'un Home In The Morn'un' [Acid Jazz]

What a pleasant surprise (and relief as it's very, very poor for good quality new releases again so far this week) this landed in the inbox this morning. A cover version of one of my all time favourite crossover tunes (picked up very cheaply many moons ago, which has since become very popular) from Margie Joseph "One More Chance" from 1969 on Volt.

The flip side is also a cover, of Lou Pride's monster Northern Soul song "I'm Com'un Home In The Morn'un'" which has seen one or two other covers and I'm afraid that this isn't one of the best of them. Men Of North Country, who are actually from Israel, covered it on Acid Jazz in 2014 (included below) as did Lifford Shillingford on Sonic Wax.

Lou Pride is a four figure tune to find on the original 1970 Suemi (green) label with the highest price listed on Popsike being $4,350 in 2012. There are plenty of blue 70s pressings (i.e. bootlegs) floating around as it was a very popular record in it's day. Pride re-recorded a slower version of the song and released it on a 2005 CD "Keep On Believing" which was reissued only last year by Last Bastion records on 7" vinyl.

The cover of Margie Joseph is pretty sympathetic to the original. Not surprisingly, as it has his signature all over it, it was written arranged and produced by one Wilson Turbinton otherwise known as the great Willie Tee. What an underrated talent Margie Joseph was. Unfortunately for her she was competing with Aretha when she was at her best.

It is digitally released by The Mighty Typhoons on Acid Jazz in collaboration with TARanto-AmsterDAM based label Tardam Records who released it on vinyl (and CDS promo) in 2015.

I'm not aware of anyone else covering the Margie Joseph song but I'm sure if you know of any you'll leave a comment. There is a bootleg of a Willie Tee version on Gatur but many dispute that it is Willie Tee actually singing it. Ian Levine claims he has an acetate/carver of an unreleased Gatur tape of it which he played on his monthly podcasts (episode 38 in March 2016). It certainly doesn't sound like Willie Tee to my ears and some have suggested Jimmy (I'm Gonna Make You An Offer You Can't Refuse) Helms which I wouldn't disagree with but Jimmy Helms is a British based singer! I would guess 'at best' that it is a demo version of the song that Willie got someone in to sing. However, Mr. Levine has been known in the past to try to pull the wool over people's eyes, (The Four Vandals "Wrong Side Of Town" with X Factor winner Steve Brookstein in 1999 for example) so who knows could he have got Jimmy Helms to sing it and try and pass it off as Willie Tee, does he think we're all stupid, as this is definitely not Willie Tee singing as far as I'm concerned? I've extracted the song from his podcast and posted it below so you can decide.

Candace Woodson [2022] - Perfect [Self Released] (Full Album)

Candace Woodson made a turnaround with her hit single "Midas Touch" in 2021 which we are told has received 50k downloads/streams. A Tom Moulton remix of it is included on her new album "Perfect" due for release next Friday 8 Aug 2022.

The album has been in production for a year by Candace, Nigel Lowis, Julian Jonah, Gary Van Den Bussche and others and will also be available on CD.

The title track "(Trying To Be) Perfect" is a cover of a Valerie Simpson 2012 album track from "Dinosaurs Are Coming Back Again" chosen by Gary and released as her last single which was a slow burner and became a real grower.

Other tracks include "She's Back" which has a funky "Like Sugar" groove, "Spread Love" has a Mary Mary gospel vibe. "Step To This Love Song" is a song for Candace's stepper fan base with "Better Days" being a smooth jazz song. When interviewed on Gary's Starpoint Radio Show, Candace was asked about the man in her life, to which she responded that she was still looking for "Mr Right" which is the title of a ballad on the album.

Julian Jonah, who has just had a hit with "Now's The Time For Us", co-wrote and produced the uptempo "Better Together". Another uptempo number, "Dancin'", has been given the thumbs up by BBC's John Leech with early demo plays. Finally, "Steal The Night" was paired with "(Trying to Be) Perfect" as a double (website only) single released earlier this year.

With the variety of ballads, steppers, smooth jazz, dance tunes, a funky number and even a gospel inspired song there is something for everyone. I think my choice cut is the remix of "Midas Touch" on which Tom Moulton has done a fine job and on the funky "She's Back" Candace is heard in a new light.

Candace is about to tour the UK on the Giants Of Soul tour commencing on 4 Sep with many artists who were big in the 80s e.g. Rose Royce's Gwen Dickey, Deniece Williams, Alexander O'Neal and more.

D'jear Feat. Derran Knight [2022] - Love Is Real [Deep Street]

D’jear had a UK Soul Chart #1 in summer 2021 with "Show Me" featuring Heidi Burson. The follow up single is "Love Is Real" which features the soulful vocals of Derran Knight and will be released next Friday 8 Aug 20220 on all the main DSPs on his own Deep Street label.

It has that signature sound and fusion of Disco, Soul & R&B flavours fusing subtle strings, a firm and fat live bass line, sweet trumpet sounds and a lead synth.

D’jear is Brighton (UK) based DJ/producer Andy Perrett who made his first release, an EP, back in 2006.

The Turbines [2022] - We Got To Start Over / What More Can I Say [Soul Direction Origins #SDO-1006]

The latest release from Alan Kitchener's Soul Direction Origins imprint (which is the logo for the rare stuff) is a 1968 outing by The Turbines with "We Got To Start Over" / "What More Can I Say". It will be available from Soul Directions in Aug 2022. No specific date given and they don't appear to be available to pre-order as yet but keep checking the website.

It was originally released on Cenco, a label based in Hollywood, CA, run by Mike Gradney (Gradny) between 1961-69. It released around 20+ singles between 1961-62 and started again in 1965-68 with around another 20+ releases, although there are gaps in the catalogue number sequences in both runs so there could be some, as yet, undiscovered releases. An interesting thing to note is that the only album it released was by Ike & Tina Turner "Get It - Get It" in 1966 (which was reissued by Capitol in 1970) from which the title track was issued as a single on the label in 1967.

I've no idea of the value of an original copy as none are listed on Popsike (only single-sided Soulwax bootlegs which aren't even listed on Discogs nor 45Cat but from sales dates may have been pressed around 2018 and I have a fairly good idea who was behind them but couldn't possibly put it in writing!). Only one original has ever sold on Discogs in 2019 for £1,100, so I would guess that they are very hard to come by!

45Cat has The Turbines single dated May 1968 which appears to be the last release on the label. An M. Davis is credited as one of the writers which has been attributed to Melvin Davis on Discogs. But why would a Detroit writer be recording on an L.A. label, although admittedly it does have a Detroit sound. In fact comparisons have been drawn with the lead singer on "We Got To Start Over" and David Ruffin!

It is believed that Fred & The Turbins who released "Bernadine" / "Till There Was You" on the label in 1967 is the same group as The Turbines. It is a very rare and expensive record selling for around the £4.5k mark with only 3 originals coming up on a Popsike search, the last selling in Jan 2018 for $4,861 with 37 bids on it. There are only two currently listed for sale on Discogs for £4,600 and £5,000.

The only information on the Fred & The Turbins label is the producer Ray Jackson who was later a member of The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band as trombonist.

Another group, Al McKay & The Turbans, also recorded on Cenco in 1966. They later became The Teen Turbans who released a single on Loma in Dec 1966, the B side of which was popular on the Northern Soul scene with a Van McCoy written song "We Need To Be Loved" with the addition of three female vocalists (Source GarageHangover)

This is where it starts getting interesting as Al McKay also later joined The Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band and from 1973-81 was a member of EWF (and also The Chocolate Jam Co). He's on writing credits for many of their hits including "September", "Saturday Night", "Sing A Song" as well as writing "Best Of My Love" for The Emotions (all co-written with Maurice White).

Another member, drummer Ralph Johnson, also joined EWF around 1971. Could this group be the embryo of The Turbines? Perhaps not as McKay (and Jackson) may have already joined Watts 103rd by 1968 but an interesting aside anyway! I've requested information from Al McKay so watch this space.
