What a pleasant surprise (and relief as it's very, very poor for good
quality new releases again so far this week) this landed in the inbox this
morning. A cover version of one of my all time favourite crossover tunes
(picked up very cheaply many moons ago, which has since become very
popular) from Margie Joseph "One More Chance" from 1969 on Volt.
The flip side is also a cover, of Lou Pride's monster Northern Soul song "I'm Com'un Home In The Morn'un'" which has seen one or two other covers and I'm afraid that this isn't
one of the best of them. Men Of North Country, who are actually from
Israel, covered it on Acid Jazz in 2014 (included below) as did Lifford
Shillingford on Sonic Wax.
Lou Pride is a four figure tune to find on the original 1970 Suemi
(green) label with the highest price listed on
Popsike
being $4,350 in 2012. There are plenty of blue 70s pressings (i.e.
bootlegs) floating around as it was a very popular record in it's day.
Pride re-recorded a slower version of the song and released it on a 2005
CD "Keep On Believing" which was reissued only last year by
Last Bastion records on 7" vinyl.
The cover of Margie Joseph is pretty sympathetic to the original. Not
surprisingly, as it has his signature all over it, it was written arranged
and produced by one Wilson Turbinton otherwise known as the great Willie
Tee. What an underrated talent Margie Joseph was. Unfortunately for her
she was competing with Aretha when she was at her best.
It is digitally released by The Mighty Typhoons on Acid
Jazz in collaboration with TARanto-AmsterDAM based label Tardam Records who released it
on vinyl (and CDS promo) in 2015.
I'm not aware of anyone else covering the Margie Joseph song but I'm sure
if you know of any you'll leave a comment. There is a bootleg of a Willie
Tee version on Gatur but many dispute that it is Willie Tee actually singing it. Ian Levine claims he has an acetate/carver of an unreleased Gatur
tape of it which he played on his monthly podcasts (episode 38 in
March 2016). It certainly doesn't sound like Willie Tee to my ears and
some have suggested Jimmy (I'm Gonna Make You An Offer You Can't Refuse) Helms which I wouldn't disagree with but Jimmy Helms is a British based singer! I would guess 'at best' that it is a demo
version of the song that Willie got someone in to sing. However, Mr. Levine
has been known in the past to try to pull the wool over people's eyes, (The Four Vandals "Wrong Side Of Town" with X Factor winner Steve Brookstein in 1999 for example) so
who knows could he have got Jimmy Helms to sing it and try and pass it off as Willie Tee, does he think we're all stupid, as this is definitely not Willie Tee singing as far as I'm concerned? I've extracted the song from his podcast and posted it below so
you can decide.
