Barbara Weathers (Atlantic Starr) - A Profile

Barbara Weathers (7 Dec 1963) was born in Greensboro, NC,  on 7 Dec 1963 and is therefore 59 today. She is perhaps best known as being Sharon Bryant's replacement in Atlantic Starr in 1984 after they were approached by MCA Records to produce demos of two songs, "Secret Lovers" and "Silver Shadow", for her. MCA subsequently declined the demos but Atlantic Starr saw her potential and asked her to join the group. Both songs were released on their "As The Band Turns" album and "Secret Lovers" went on to be their biggest hit to date reaching #3 on the Hot 100 in 1985 with "Silver Shadow" just missing out on the UK Top 40 at #41.
Weathers appeared on one more Atlantic Starr album "All In The Name Of Love" which spawned their #1 hit "Always" in 1987.

In 1989 Weathers left the group to pursue a solo career and in 1990 released a self-titled debut solo album produced by Earth, Wind & Fire’s Maurice White. She followed it in 1995 with "Seeing For the Very First Time" produced by Jeff Weber and released on his Weber Works label in Japan only which apparently sold out in the first week of release.

Her third album "Satisfaction Guaranteed" was also released by Weber Works in Aug 2011 which seems quite hard to find as does her other Weber Works album.

As with so many soul singers, Barbara began singing in church at the age of seven and honed her craft singing with a number of local groups and by the age of thirteen was a member of Covacus. She joined Atlantic Starr in 1984. Up until this time the group, whilst having numerous R&B chart hits, had only two moderate Hot 100 successes with "Circles" (#38) and "Touch A Four Leaf Clover" (#87).

The playlist below is limited to the tracks from the two Atlantic Starr albums where Weathers sang lead and a few tracks from her debut solo album as unfortunately her other two solo albums are not available on Spotify.

There are a couple of rather grainy video, presumably dubbed from video tape, of two of four solo singles released from her self-titled 1990 album.
