I suppose it was only a matter of time before someone actually covered
The Ambassadors "I Really Love" since samples of it have been used on many songs in the last year or
so, probably best know for Morgan Munroe's "Mutual" a few months back. Well here it is, purists look away now!
The song was written by Arctic label owner Jimmy Bishop and Kenny
Gamble and recorded by The Ambassadors in 1969 on Arctic which was their
only hit reaching #43 on the R&B chart. They released one album "Soul
Summit" also on Arctic which included the song as well as a few others
which have been played on the Northern soul scene over the years. The
original album is a bit of a collector's item fetching up to £500. Three
of the members (Herley Johnson Jr., Orlando Oliphant and Robert Todd)
later joined up with Jennifer Holmes from The Ebonys to form Creme D'Cocoa who released two albums in the late 70s on
Venture Records co-owned by Toy Camillo.
Dee Dee Sharp (Kenny Gamble's future wife) recorded it first in 1965 on Cameo and had a slightly bigger hit with it reaching #37 R&B and #78 Hot 100. SecondHandSongs incorrectly includes The Cavaliers' 1967 song "I Really Love You" as a cover, which has writers credits as Stephen & Bishop (but don't think it's Jimmy Bishop) but it is a different song.
The song has been re-recorded by Mexican/American Raquel
Ramirez from California and released today (23 Sep 2022) and is more akin to the Dee Dee Sharp 1965 version
It's her second single having released another cover of
The Marvelettes "Please Mr Postman" in August.
