On face value this looks very much like a debut album from
Melvin Gentry as there is nothing else listed for the
artist, until you discover that he was a member
(guitarist/drummer/vocalist) of Midnight Star which begins
to make sense as this is far too good to be a debut album.
Midnight Star were formed in 1976 and signed by Dick Griffey to Solar
records and released their first album "The Beginning" in 1980 and
proceeded to release another eight up until 1990 before disbanding. They
reunited in 2000 and released a tenth album in 2002. The group was
inducted into the Cincinnati Black Walk of Fame in July 2022.
Melvin was born in Flint, MI, and left home to attend university in
Kentucky where he met the future members of Midnight Star.
His debut(?) solo album "Soul Weekend" was released last week (17 Sep)
which I keep coming back to since it has started appearing in the Amazon
UK 100 Hot New Releases top 10.
The standout track is "My Feelings" but I also really like the bluesy "Take A Chance" on which he reminds me of someone I can't quite place but think along
the lines of Johnnie Taylor, Johnny 'Guitar' Watson, Latimore.
He also uses the alias McArthur and released a single "Looking For Love" in 2017 (video below).
