Leon Cook [2022] - Steppin' In / Last One To Know [Cannonball #CBLL038B]

This new release from Cannonball Records has been announced for release late Nov 2022. It is the first release on the label since the marvellous Charles' Buddy' Smith in Mar 2022.

This time out it's a quality double-sider from Leon Cook. The A side "Steppin' In" appears on 7" vinyl for the first time and is licensed from his only solo album "Cookin' with Leon" and is backed by a later ballad "The Last One To Know" which is the only single listed for him (as Leon Cooke) which was released on Roar and recorded at After Dark studio, Parma, OH (on the southern edge of Cleveland), yet the only other listed single from the label has a Pittsburgh address which I guess isn't that far away.

Leon Cook, born in Columbus, Cleveland on 6 Feb 1947 and died Toledo, Ohio on 16 Feb 2006, aged 59, was a guitarist who played with several jazz legends such as Oscar Peterson, Clark Terry, Sonny Stitt, Hank Marr, and organists Richard "Groove" Holmes, Jack McDuff and Jimmy McGriff.

He was a member of The Heavy Brothers who released one album "Live!" in 1973 recorded at The Scioto Inn, Columbus, Ohio. The vocalist with the group was Dottie Pearson who you may know from a couple of sides "Bring It Over Baby" and "House Made Of Love" released by Grapevine in 2004 from an unreleased 1978 album "Dottie". Another track from the album "Hello Baby" was released a year earlier by Bee Cool. Only two tracks from the album saw the light of day "Imagine Me" / "Doing What He Wants Me To" released as a single on Avanti in 1978.
