The latest pair of vinyl singles to hit the streets from Hit and Run includes three tracks
from a very highly sought after 1970 Turbo album "The New Sounds" by The New Sound. It has always been a source of confusion as to whether the group
was called The New Sound or The New Sounds, as the plural appears on cover
and singular on the label.
It is the first time on 7" for all three songs, each written by
individual members of the group. The first "Don't Take Your Love From Me" by Jack Jones, the second "Here I Am" by Lawrence Brown and the third "How I Feel Inside" by Robert Tanner who was one of three lead singers in the
group.
Tanner released two solo singles on Megatone (Lynchburg, VA). The first
in 1969 included a version of "How I Feel Inside" retitled "How I Feel" and the next in 1970 was his solo
version of another New Sounds album track "Sweet Memories".
The group started out in 1955 in Lynchburg, VA as The Jivers and in fact the first Robert Tanner single included music by
The Jivers on the label and "How I Feel" was also recorded on the Megatone label
earlier by Little Lewis (Melvin Lewis) in 1968, again with music by The
Jivers on the label. He was another member of the group.
The album was reissued on vinyl in Japan by P-Vine in 1990 and again on CD
in 2011 by Outta Sight paired with an album by Willie & West "At Their Best" (1971)
titled "Willie & West Meet The New Sounds". The value of the original vinyl is approaching four figures and even the 1990 reissue
is into three figures with one of three sellers, John Manship Records,
currently asking £175 for it.

What a beautiful reissue. Indeed here is an unknown and ephemeral group which recorded a very interesting album which I advise you to listen to. Failing to find it, the CD coupled with Willie & West is very good.
