The Bar-Kays were formed in 1964 in Memphis, TN, and were a house band for Stax and supported Otis Redding. Sadly most of the original group died in the same plane crash that killed Otis Redding in Dec. 1967. Two members survived, trumpeter Ben Cauley survived the crash and bassist James Alexander flew on a different fight as there was insufficient room on the ill-fated flight. Earlier in 1967 they had their first, and their biggest chart hit (#3 R&B #17 Hot 100), with the instrumental "Soul Finger".
Cauley and Alexander reformed the band and recorded right up to the end of the 80s and have since released albums in the 90s, 2000s and 2010s and have to date released around 21 albums.
They have a new single, "Choosey Lover", released today (24 Jun 2022) which has more than a nod to the early 80s, sounding very reminiscent of the backing track to Mtume's "Juicy Fruit" with hints also of The Gap Band.
