Gambrells [2022] - Jive Talk / Find A Love [MD #MDJW005]

The second of three new release from MD Records comes from Gambrells who were a female trio from Detroit consisting of sisters Sharon and Sandra Gambrell and Pat Hunt.

The link to the Jock Mitchell release is Pioneer Recording Studios owned by Gary Rubin and Alan Sussman where the tracks were recorded.

The Gambrell sisters grew up living on the same block as Berry Gordy’s family and went to kindergarten with Stevie Wonder. They met Ollie McLaughlin (who was written about only last week on Deon Jackson and The Compacts post, but briefly was a producer who owned several Detroit labels named after his wife and his daughters).
They recorded "Pain In My Heart" on Carla, also recorded, but unreleased, by Jackson and another single for Carla, but were mainly used as backing singers and felt overshadowed by the roster on Carla and left. They did backing sessions for Motown on Temptations and Brenda Holloway recordings before attending auditions for Pioneer and succeed and released the two sides presented here by MD "Jive Talk" / "Find A Love".

Original copies on Pioneer now sell for around £500 but you can now own remastered versions for  a fraction of that price.

The girls teamed up with James Cheers and Bobby (Boby) Franklin (Bobby Franklin's Insanity) to form the New Loves, which did not get issued until MD picked it up on the masters and released it early 2022.

The Gambrells continued to work with some well known names of the soul scene, Scotty Bray, Steve Mancha, Jock Mitchell and the Tomangoes with Geno Washington and Dusty Wilson/Williams and also some of the stalwarts of song writing and production such as Mike Valvano, Cholly Bassoline and Marty Coleman. Despite having a few more releases and a move to Cub records, The Gambrells were never to achieve the level of fame they deserved.

  1. "Jive Talk" represents well the Detroit Sound of the time. It's good to bring it out of oblivion!!!
