Nicky Egan [2022] - This Life [Transistor Sound/Colemine] (Full EP)

A new album by Nicky Regan "This Life" is due for release on 3 Jun 2022 in conjunction with Transistor Sound and Colemine Records. Five of the tracks have already been released as an EP (26 Apr) but these, along with another five, will be on the full album .

Philadelphian Nick Egan graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production and then spent seven years in Brooklyn and toured as part of funk ensemble, Turkuaz.

She departed Turkuaz to independently release three 'digital 45's', premiering an A/B side each month, with a video for each A side, accompanied by a release show and live screening. These became a 7-track EP, "The 45 Homestead Project" released via Ropeadope Records in 2014.

Since then she relocated to L.A. after being invited to be vocalist/keyboardist for L.A. psych-soul band Chicano Batman. It was originally intended as a short assignment but turned into four years. In between tours she has been working with New York based Dap-Kings guitarist and producer Joe Crispiano working on tracks for "This Life" which was recorded to 8 track tape machine.

Below are the first five tracks released as an EP (which I don't need to try to describe as you can listen and make up your own mind) but I believe a couple of the best tracks are still to come on the album. My choice cuts from the first five would be "Back To You" (a single released in Feb 2021) and "This Life". The other tree tracks have all been released as singles "Summer In The City" (Sep 2021), "Changes" (Apr 2021) and "Run Run" (Mar 2021).

"Every Part", for me, is the clear winner, a mid-tempo tune which has a riff that reminds me of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up" in places. Then comes "Bringing Me Down" which has 'that beat' that might prick up the ears of Northern Soul devotees, but I'm afraid, for me, the vocals are 'too white' sounding, if you know what I mean, which has it bordering on a pop tune. "Funny Feelings" (my next choice cut) follows which is what I'd describe as a soulful ballad/stepper. "In The Mirror" is more of a funk/rock tune to my ears with a lolloping beat. The album closes with a ballad "Godchild"

The album is available to pre-order on vinyl from Colmine.
