Names familiar to you? Brick & Ripple
are actually Jimmy 'Lord' Brown from 70s/80s band Brick
and Curtis Reynolds who was with another 70s group Ripple.
Brick was formed in 1972 as a merger of members from two bands, one a disco
band and the other a jazz band. They broke through with their second single
in 1976 "Dazz" (disco-jazz) (#1 R&B / #3 Hot 100) and their only
UK hit. They released seven albums between 1976-88 and had twelve entries on
the R&B chart, three of them entering Hot 100.
Whilst Ripple were originally from the Mid-West (Chicago, IL / Kalamzoo,
MI) they were signed to Atlanta based label GRC and hit with their first
single "I Don't Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky" (#11 R&B #67 Hot
100) which opened doors for them to tour with some of the biggest acts of
the time such as EWF, Kool & The Gang, O'Jays and Commodores. They later
signed to Salsoul and had a dance hit with "The Beat Goes On and On" in
1977.
Jimmy Brown (lead vocalist, saxophone, flute, trumpet) and Curtis Reynold
(vocalist and all Keyboards) have been playing together for over four
decades as Jimmy & Curtis as well as being members of Brick and
Ripple. They went back into the studio to work on new material with a couple of
friends, Sleepy Brown, writer/producer of the group OutKast and
singer/songwriter/producer Luke Garison ("Luke G") and one of the results is
this new single "No Love Like Yours".
It's released digitally on 21 May 2020 by the ever illustrious Izipho
Soul on
Bandcamp, but I'm not sure if/when it will be available on vinyl but will find
out.
