Another of those
Bandcamp only Paul Simpson The Philadelphia Re-edit Sessions was released today (18 Feb 2022) and is available for two weeks ONLY. This time around it's the turn
of Ecstasy, Passion & Pain. Released today so you've got until 4 Mar to grab it and
then it will be gone.
Ecstasy, Passion & Pain were founded around 1972 by
Barbara Roy (aka Barbara Gaskins) and disbanded in 1977 after one album and
approx. eight singles. Another single was was released as Barbara Roy
& Ecstasy, Passion & Pain in 1981. They had six entries in
the US R&B charts with all but one getting into the lower reaches of
the Hot 100 with "Ask Me" (video footage below from Soul Train) and
"Touch And Go" being their biggest hits.
Prior to Ecstasy, Passion & Pain, Barbara Roy/Gaskins
sang in a duo with her niece Brenda Gaskins as
Barbara & Brenda who released around eight singles
between 1963-68. One of which was a cover of a song recorded a few
months earlier on the same label, Dynamo, by Tommy Hunt "Never Love A
Robin" (written by Luther Dixon and Inez Foxx) which is regarded as a
Northern Soul classic.
Roy then went on to release several solo singles in the 80s.
